How do you work Java?!?!

Hey, so I need help! I needed to get Java to go into the chat room. So because I have a 10.5.8 version macbook I got a java for that version. Thing is I downloaded it, then I installed it. I have no idea how to set it up, or what to do to get it working, because I still can't go into chat. Can someone please help me out like ASAP?! Thanks!

I hate to say this but it works best on Firefox for me. I know either Safari or Chrome isn't supported, but I can't remember which.

Last time I checked, you simply download and install, from here (http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/). I think it also has a wizard to let you import stuff from Safari, like bookmarks.
