View Full Version : Wisdom Teeth?

I think my wisdom teeth might be coming in, but I'm not sure. I am 17, so I'm old enough (I believe they come in around 15-25.) I don't have insurance until March, or I'd just go have x-rays done.

Here's what's going on. The last week or so I've been having some increased sensitivity in back on the bottom. Both sides, although I think one side is a problem with my crown, that's another story.. Anyway, I've had some pain on the bottom right side lately and I was feeling around back there and I do feel a little bump on the gums just past my molars and another spot next to it where my gums feel a little rough or raw, like perhaps something is breaking through. The thing is, I thought it was supposed to hurt more, and it's the only one. The top have been just fine and like I said, the other side is probably the crown I have on my first molar.

So, does this sound like a wisdom tooth coming in? Can they come in separately or is it normally around the same time? Oh, and for anyone who's had them taken out because of lack of room, at what point do they normally do that? Like, now? Or would they wait for it to come through more?

Yah, one wisdom tooth can poke out earlier than the other. An x-ray would be able to confirm that though.
You'll need to wait until the teeth are big enough to extract, depending on the dentist. Sometimes they can grow horizontally into your back molars, so you can see them poking out. But damn, you'll feel it.

When you have them removed, see if they can do it surgically with a general anaesthetic. It's easier for the dentist and much less painful afterwards.

mine were fully in when I was 12. Got them out last summer (15).
Hurt for a months when they were coming in, but getting them pulled was hella fun and i got super high on the anesthesia! :p and my face was numb as all hell and it was funny! I recommended it! :D

You are a minor, insurance or not, you have a right to healthcare. Speak to your dentist, its illegal to deny a minor healthcare.

Oh, I know that, but we can't afford the procedure and painkillers without insurance.

Ah, I have to say the American Health Care system really does suck. I guess one of the few benefits of living in the UK is the NHS. If it really is just a question of waiting, then take some moderate pain killers (Paracetamol, or Ibuprofen), and keep your mouth as clean as you can (Warm salt water rinse each night, along with brushing twice a day and fluoride mouth wash). Assuming you already keep your mouth clean :P just focus on pain management until you can get the procedure done.

Yup, that's that plan :D It's really not that bad right now, just when I eat hard stuff, and I can only chew on that side because of the crown thing on the other side. :/ But yeah, it only hurts when I eat certain stuff right now.

You definitely don't want to wait until they have impacted, because it can cause severe damage shifting your teeth & jaw. On the other hand, you do want to let it grow because not everyone's wisdom teeth are disruptive, and some can keep it as an extra set of teeth.
Taking an X-Ray is your best step of precaution, that way you can judge its growth and your dentist would be able to help you predict its direction of growth to see if you even need to have them taken out in the first place.
Increased sensitivity in the area isn't much of a sign that it's wisdom teeth and not an infection or disease.

I had mine removed when they were almost fully formed, and the X-ray showed that one tooth was almost reaching my back molars. I decided to have all four out in one go even though the dentist told me my top teeth may never need to be removed at all, just as a once-for-all peace of mind thing. I hate having those surgeries :P

I had something similar I was experiencing a month or so ago. Bit of rawness back there, a strange inexplicable bump on the top of the gum. I'm almost 21, and it was a false alarm :P (but I'm hoping I'm taking after my mum and they decide to never grow in).

It's just like your last set of molars in that some will start before others.
