Lately I have been taking melatonin instead of cutting. The amount I have been taking though is 10mg and 5mg is too much for a lot of grown people. Sometimes I will even take another at night before I go to bed. So that makes up to 15mg a day. I take it cause the medicine does not actually make you go to sleep but just relaxes your nerves to the point you want to sleep, but with me (as long as I do not lay my head down) it makes me extremely happy then very numb to the point I can barely feel anything emotionally. I have been stressed out a lot and I found this out because I took them one night before I was ready for bed (double the dosage) and I had just got so happy and carefree. I can tell when it starts to wear off because my muscles will start twitching when I have any type of stress on me.(or if I have not taken it in a few days) It is a herbal medicine and I just want to know if this is seriously harming to my health. I mean if it is something like very minor I probably will not stop, but I still want to know. Oh and I do not take them on weekends during the day.

All of the compounds in most melatonin supplements are natural compounds. So it's pretty safe. The common side effects of taking to much melatonin are Head Aches, Nausea, and Dizziness. If you start feeling any of those symptoms I strongly recommend you reduce the amount you take or stop taking it all together. Also are you taking any other medications? Melatonin can interact with certain medications, which commonly include blood thinners, birth control pills, diabetes medication, and immunosuppressents.

In that case I strongly recommend you talk to your doctor.

Well if a doctor with your full medical history including your medications deems it acceptable to take a melatonin supplement then you should be fine.

As with all drugs, natural or not, you will eventually develop a dependency and find it hard to give it up. Example? Tobacco, its natural, but its addictive. Pills are no different, natural or synthetic.

This is one of the most untrue statements I have ever heard. Not all drugs will cause you to develop a dependency, especially not melatonin considering it is a hormone produced by YOUR body.

Will, natural drugs, synthetic drugs, hormones, its all the same in the mind of a human. I didn't say your BODY would become dependent on it, but YOU as a person will, you won't WANT to live without it when you see the positive affects from it, and when its time to stop taking it, you'll find it hard, if not impossible. Similar to, but not quite the same as people that take things like Meth, and other Narcotics for weight loss, they say to themselves that they'll spend a week taking it, and then stop once they've lost 20 pounds, in reality, they loose the pounds, but forget or don't want to stop taking the drugs...

You should stop taking more than the normal dose of melatonin, if I read right you're having too much which could cause problems. I take valerian before I go to sleep, you should try some.

Lol, melatonin, really? It is fine, I know people that take it everyday, never had an issue. It is fine, chill.
But honestly if you are taking it in place of cutting, see a psychiatrist.
