View Full Version : What defines a normal person?

A rather broad question. What defines being a normal person? I ask since I don't believe that anybody is normal. We're all different, therefore, there is no normal. I'm just curious what everyone thinks.

You don't get 'normal' people. Normal is the majority and in the human species you don't get people that are exactly the same. Sheep (for example) are normal I guess because they all look the same, act the same way. In most species you have a norm but I guess we don't follow that.

I'd say a normal person, is someone of average height, average weight, average intelligence, average everything, basically.
Average being, the same as the majority of other people, or in that range.

In many ways, everyone is normal, and in many ways, they're not.
A lot of us, have the same height, weight and intellect as each other ( well not exact same, but in the same range ), so that's how we are normal.

A way that we're not normal, is physical appearance. We don't have the same face, or look the same, and we don't sound the same.

So yeah, I think you get the point. In many ways we are normal, and in many ways we aren't normal.
Everyone is different though. Nobody is the exact same as another person.

I don't know really. Someone who when they get out of school, wakes up every morning, goes to their job, comes home, watches tv, goes to sleep and repeats it:P
exactly what i don't want to do when i'm older...

Normality is statistical.

Normal is the closest one can reach a society's demands and regulations. Normal varies in every subculture, and is never fixed. A norm is needed to prevent extreme deviation, though sometimes the norm is flawed, in which case the deviation is both justifiable and vital.

I think being normal is a man made concept. Over time we have grown to certain customs for example the normal family, wife, husband, kids, and a dig. I also think that the definition of normal varies from person to person.

Conforming to the standards society sets. Which is constantly changing, so I guess being normal can be costly haha

Normal can be defined based on statistics. Someone who falls within a certain distance of average in all or most categories can be considered normal.

I disagree that there are no normal people. By definition, more people are normal. No one is perfectly average, but people are fairly normal.

If there was a normal, then everybody would be the same. There would be no difference of opinion, and even physical appearance, which is impossible due to genetics.

If there was a normal, then everybody would be the same.

And why would everybody be the same if there was a normal? You're basically telling us that if there was a normal then everyone would conform to being normal. Your logic is nonsensical.

This makes no sense. You are basically saying that if there is a normal, everyone automatically falls within it. In other words, you seem to be saying there is no such thing as abnormality.

Theres no such thing as normal, becuase everyone has a different context. If you were Indian, you'd find Americans to be not normal. But if you were American, you would find Indians to be not normal.

In what way is he saying that?
to me it seems like he is on the "normal is impossible side"

as for me, Genetics, and history make the chance to humans can be completely alike is such a small chance (there is one, but véry small, nothing is completely impossible (well unless you are able to prove it isn't)brackets in brackets :D) that it can be left out, but because language is defined by people, and normal is a term that is generally used (in my surroundings) to define "falling in the average range" i use it mostly precisely to define that.

There hardly be would be such thing as abnormality. Because we'd all want to look the same as everyone else and act the same as well to fit in.

Normal is a relative term and is most often used in connection with the DCM in diagnose of mental illness and is always changing. I think a DCM 5 just came out. To quote a Web definition: Normal refers to a lack of significant deviation from the average so to be normal you must conform to the majority of any given culture. What maybe normal for one culture would not necessarily be normal people of a different culture.

I don't know what makes a person normal, but I certainly don't want to be normal. Judging by the responses it sounds like a boring, awful existence.

EDIT: Shit I think I just unknowingly called myself a hipster.

To be simple about it, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Basically, to one person, we may seem "Normal", while to another we may seem "Weird".

Just really depends on really what ideas and morals you were raised on, for example: Someone who grows up in a family of nudists may not consider people being nude around other being odd at all, and actually normal, while someone with an opposite upbringing may consider it strange.

the fact that everyculture and everyone has their on standards as to what normal is,proves to me that we are all normal just in diffrent ways.

What tears it for me is people trying to shove their ideas of nomality off on me and others!

Normal is a diffrent term for everyone, such as someone with trouble seeing at first he/she thinks everyone see just like him/her and that's normal. Normal in a term means being part of the majority so if there were 19 tall people and 3 small people being tall would be "normal".

a normal person is just a person being themselves.

I guess 'normal' is defined by majority. But in reality no person is really noral, someone completely average with no real skill. I think if someone tries to be normal, they sre just bein more different. Not sure if this is what you were looking for, but this is my opinion. :)

A normal person could be defined as the 'mode of society'. Take these numbers.

112113114115116117118119110

1 would be the mode. Same with people. Lets say all the one's were similar people. They'd be classified as normal.

Nothing. Despite their outward appearance, nobody is normal.
