View Full Version : Will this drink help my weight?

So sick of being thin/boney. So very sick of it. I'd rather be somewhere in between trim and before chubby. Average size you know?
I've struggled with it so much, and the recent trend of skinny hate is just making it worse. I eat like crazy, my metabolism is just too fast. Doctor said to try drinking 2 bottles of Ensure Plus a day.
I did that along with eating as I do. Somehow I dropped from 100 to 95 pounds. My target weight is 112 pounds, then hopefully 116. No tapeworm, nothing out of the ordinary, just a fast metabolism :\
So in desperation and after some girls asked if I was a "Purge-sister" (a pro bulimia group? Really though?) I popped into the health shop and picked up Nature-Made Weight Gain. 4 scoops into 16 oz of whole milk.
It says to drink before bed so I'm chugging it down but is there a way to speed it up? I'm currently 98 pounds, hoping this drink thing will boost me.
It's basically a "pure" protein drink, and I'm not too intelligent about that. My boyfriend condones my use of protein drinks but supports me in weight gain but won't tell me if it's ok to drink this stuff more than once or twice a day because he's never personally used it (he works out whereas I literally will not move unless I must). Google didn't help me either :\

Also if anyone has tips on gaining weight/fat, please please do share D:

My first instinct would be to say that the protein drink probably will help your weight gain once you've taken it for a while, but I would have thought the Ensure Plus would have done that too. I think the whole milk will help some too, considering it contains the highest amount of cream in the mixture. I would advise you, though, that if you don't know whether or not you can use the drink more than once a day--and the guidelines on the package don't specify otherwise--it would be safest for you to assume that once a day is all that it should be taken. I would recommend, if you're not already, making sure that you eat plenty of meat, and making sure your body gets plenty of rest at night--sleep is important in regulating the metabolism of the body. Other than that, I'm not entirely sure what to say, I've not encountered a situation like this before really. I wish you the best of luck and hope that you're able to reach your goal

My sleep has gotten out of whack, I need to fix that. Thanks! Yeah, looking at the Ensure thing, I think it's just safe to try to use this as much as I can in a safe manner, aka following their instructions. I mean two ensures are allowed, more than two actually but since I lost weight, I'm just confused. This thing seems to be helping. My stomach feels "heavier" after I chug down the last bit.

you lost weight because your metabolism is fast, and the ensure's dont take long to digest and proses...its designed to be a fast nutrient drink. I am sure that you have heard this before but the only way to gain weight is either by exercising and building muscle or by getting fatter. You can gain weight with just your diet, if you consume more foods that take longer to process. example junk food, just don't go over board to where it's really UN-healthy, and is doing you more bad than good.

So what you're saying is that by the time the Ensure settled in my stomach, it was already being taken care of by my metabolism and like, evaporated? Ugh, I feel cheated.
Yes, I'm aiming for more fat, or at least up my small amount of fat content. As long as I get to my goal weight, I'll be happy.

I'm essentially just trying to get there through consuming more calories than my body needs. Not a large amount, maybe like 50 more than needed. With what I'm currently drinking, that's 780 calories. On a day with work I usually eat about 700 calories, on non work days, at least 850. The calorie counter I googled (and plugged my target weight into) says I need at least around 2,000 daily to build myself up to get there. So I thought, oh let me take this drink more than once a day, that's double! But I'm not sure and I don't see anything other than what it suggests.

If I consume food that take longer, will it make me full? like would it just sit in my tummy and make me feel like I don't need to eat?

I really don't think having so much protein could be good for you. To much of a good thing can be a bad thing. Whole milk itself should boost your weight a lot. But you should really workout when gaining weight, because if you don't, it could turn into fat, and muscle looks better than fat.

But as an aid, Ensure is the best nutrient drink I've ever had. Like whenever I have it, it's a big treat for me. I love the taste of Vanilla. I believe it's called Ensure Boost, but I'm not to sure. It could also be Ensure Plus. Each drink is 350 calories. Just make sure you eat the rainbow of vegetables and fruits.

My whole life I was encouraged to eat anything I want so I could gain weight, now that I'm at the desired weight (according to doctors), I wish I did it differently and ate healthy and I wish I exercised or worked out. I'm at about 15-17% body fat, and very disappointed. I also have not to much muscle.

I've very little body fat. That's what I want, the fat. If it accumulates in an awkward place, like gives me saddle bags, I will get myself on a work out regime. Fruit and veggies, meats, dairy, wheat, and not much junk food. Haven't actually had too much thinking about it now. I love the vanilla. Tried the strawberry, blegh. I suppose that's true, protein should probably be in moderation. Some sites say neigh, others yay so I'll walk middle ground and drink it only once a day.

May as well work out though, that could possibly set my metabolism into a better pace huh? Or is it wishful thinking?
In other news I'm back at 97 pounds. Working less, sleeping more, and overall not moving and changing nothing. Bleeeeegh.

You could try using all that extra protein to build muscle. Go to a gym every few days or join a program or something. It can be used to get toned from being large, or get toned from being too skinny.
Also, as a random but relevent question, how's your mood?

Well it's gonna take a while to gain a few pounds, just give it time, and eat plenty of food. Yeah, the strawberry I hate, and chocolate I'm not gonna waste my time trying. They also make calorie supplements, like calorie powder that adds extra calories to food. Forgot what it's called, but I used to take that. It's colorless, tasteless and odorless. Can go on anything or in anything, great with mashed potatoes or smoothies and shakes. A good weight gainer dinner is the typical meat and potatoes.

Calorie powder peaked my interest since that was my method of attack. I'll look into that!

My mood, can't really tell mrcharkteeth. Time of the month is on her way so I've been in a bit of bitch-mode to cry at the drop of a hat this month around. Before that I want to say I was good mood and relaxed but a ton of college work was going on, so I may have been stressed out. I can't remember. Is that tied to my weight?

I'm the same FreeFall I've always been thin One kid even calls me Skimpy. But I'm getting too underweight and no matter how much I eat, I can't seem to gain a single pound. :/
I've been drinking Carnations instant breakfast in hopes to get some muscle on me. not only does it contain a lot of protein its also got the calcium equivalent of a 16 OZ glass of milk, and vitamins C and D. Its not PURE protein, Honestly I wouldn't go with a pure protein drink mix, I would go with something that has a bunch of other nutrients
at this point my mom is starting to get paranoid about me not eating enough.

I like the chocolate flavor, tastes almost exactly like chocolate milk, actually it tastes a bit better than chocolate milk in my opinion. :) (also remember different places have different companies they get milk from, and each company flavours a bit differently as well.)

My mom too. It's pissing me off her "she doesn't eat right" "she doesn't eat enough" "She's just eating to eat, not because it's helping" on the phone. My cousin's grandmother's uncle's dad doesn't need to know about my weight for one, bughnerhwefr.

I eat everything and anything, just not as much junk. I just downed three Italian BMT subs from subway, foot-long, in the past hour.
I've heard of Carnations (I could be confused with flowers or another product).

I'm actually getting good ideas, I shall take a trip in the morning to hunt these down if I can.
