In addition to a battery 'stamina mode', which Sony claims will double battery life, and 'one-touch' connectivity that links to the phone to a hifi, say, with one tap, the Xperia Z is also water resistant and dust-proof.
The water resistance means that the phone, announced at CES in Las Vegas, will work under water for up to 30 minutes. It will work in the shower, survive a dunking in the toilet and can be given a quick rinse under the tap if it gets wet.
"If you want to want to sit in the bath and watch an HD movie this is the device for you," Steve Walker, of Sony, said.
The Xperia Z will be available for pre-order in Britain from early February. Prices have not yet been confirmed.

Sony is also making a non-waterproof version of the handset, the Sony Xperia ZL. That model will not be released in Britain.

I never got the appeal of underwater electronics. Maybe cameras, because pool floors and corals and fish but...not my phone.

To survive underwater if it falls in is great! Don't get me wrong but...30 minutes?

Ok just going to be cynical Olly here. Having tried using a smartphone screen in the rain, I am not convinced about their definition of the word 'work". There is a difference between that and 'doesn't break when wet'. I understand the waterproof models have bungs in the ports (and presumably if you don't have the bungs in, they'll still get water damaged), and that sounds as though it could be fiddly and annoying for daily use.

My life proof case can stay under water for as long as you like.

Sounds neat but I personally would never bring a device with me when showering....

Looks very cool. And Jess, it's not only for bringing in the shower, the waterproofing helps on a day to day basis like if you get dirt or something on the screen (like in the video)

There is no doubt the Xperia (http://www.telstra.com.au/latest-offers/sony-xperia-z/) Z will be a very cool phone, until Samsung comes forward the with Galaxy (http://www.telstra.com.au/latest-offers/samsung-galaxy-siii/) S4 and Apple with the iPhone 5S. Once those two mobile phones are available, we will forget about the Xperia Z.

I don't think this phone will be a hit right now people are still to concentrated on Iphones and samsung s3 no ones even looking at the new blackberry or windows phones or even the HTC one x's so I think sony will have to some heavy marketing to make it sell but it really is a nice phoo
