So, for any mobile operating software fans, may it be, iOS, Windows or Android, I personally favour Android more. However, good news on the Horizon for those of us who use our phones for a bit more than games and basic functions, Ubuntu is releasing their own OS onto traditional Android units.

I'm not sure whether anyone else is excited as I am, but I think this is a major boost to the mobile industry, which seems to have dropped out of recent technological advances, handing the spotlight to newer computers etc.

The operating system, which was announced from London by Mark Shuttlesworth, is too Linux based, like Android, but is taking a more tiled approach, as can be seen with Window phones.

Sneak Preview of the lock screen seen below :D

Thanks for reading, please post thoughts below :D

Also, I was hoping people could fill out the poll, i'd love to know what mobile operating system people use!

I'm surprised you didn't include BlackBerry OS on that poll.

Oh, another thread on this.

The only reason that Canonical is able to pull this off is because of the brand-name "Ubuntu".
Everybody knows what that is, just like everybody's heard of a "Windows 8" and an "iOS". Nobody knows what a Mer (http://merproject.org/) is, and very few have ever heard of a Maemo (http://www.maemo.org/).

Your average consumer cares only about what has been significantly marketed to them and what "everybody else" uses. Since enough end-users use Ubuntu(I, personally, hate it), Canonical is able to make "Ubuntu Phone"(or whatever they'll call it) and people will use it.

Didn't they say it would run on top of Android (if that is even possible)? Because if it doesn't then I'm not interested either. Seems like a lot of features have been taken from Android, such as the notification pull down for one.

well, i use symbian, or the OS of Nokia phones(before nokia/microsoft get together). I have Ubuntu on my PC as a "back up" OS. But i rarely use it. interesting to see how an ubuntu phone will work.

Where is Symbian? The best and most developed mobile platform as for me.. nokia did a really stupid thing by installing weak hardware in their phones, it killed symbian..

My main topic here was Ubuntu, not general mobile OS. And to be honest, there are in theory hundreds of mobile OS. Some old, some new. I just think its great to have another 'main' OS out there to compete.

I love ubuntu for the fact it is open source meaning that with certain addons installed you can litterally bend it to your will. meaning that the entire look can be changed, even the startup and shutdown screens can be changed.

and actually alot of Operating systems have dropdown notifications or support it.

but once it's on phones people will be able to more freely modify how their phones look and do crazy things with them. atleat if it's still open source for phones.

A lot of ideas in lots of software are taken from other places. Did you know that Xerox was the first to pioneer a GUI, back in the 1980s? Similarly, unless you're using something that Apple has an absurd patent on, you can be inspired by an idea in one place and use it in your own thing.

Besides, what would you want instead? Notifications where you have to draw a circle on the screen to activate them?

well the good thing is it can't possibly be worse than android, which is a complete piece of crap. But then again, Ubuntu has been getting worse and worse with every release for the last 3 years (which is the reason why Fedora and Debian replaced it as my main VM) so I don't have high hopes for this either.

*this is coming from someone who knows nokia well*

The main reason Nokia got rid of the Symbian OS was so it could compete with the market. They only changed the OS or software, Nokia has not changed their hardware. Hardware is same. but you have to remember that they need to compete with the market also.
