So somewhat recently (for about a week or two) I've just been finding I don't need much sleep at all. Sometimes I might sleep for a normal sleep cycle, and then one night I just won't feel the need to sleep, sometimes a few nights in a row. I might get 9 hours of sleep over around 3 days, at one point. During the day, I don't get tired with less sleep, which is the odd thing. Any suggestions as to why this is happening?

To me, it sounds like your Circadian rhythm has gotten all zonked up. While you can survive on a minimal amount of sleep for a short period of time, your health may begin to deteriorate a bit if this continues for a long period of time. I would suggest, in order to get your circadian rhythm back on track, going to bed at the same time each night, even if you're not tired yet. Try and get some sleep when you go to bed at that time too, and do your best to wake up at around the same time as well. You could set an alarm for a certain time to help with that. Also, make sure that you're eating right and that your body is getting the proper nutrients it needs. Trust me, I can function on very little sleep for a period of time too, but if you go for too long on that sleep schedule, then your health can deteriorate. Sleep is the time when your body repairs itself most, when your mind gives itself a rest and goes over all the memories from the past day, to sharpen itself. As such, it's very important to get a proper amount of sleep each night. So again, go to bed at the same time each night and try to get up at around the same time each day (preferably getting 8+ hours of sleep if you can). If you do that, you'll find your circadian rhythm begin to get regulated again within a week or so.

It's something to be grateful for sometimes, but it's definitely NOT healthy to sustain this type of behavior. It's going to come back and bite you!

I do suggest, if you aren't already, participate in some form of physical activity and eat right (Don't Nazi on your diet, but maintain regular eating schedules and don't over-eat in a single sitting).

At this point in our lives you need sleep to recover and grow, both physically and mentally. Your body naturally releases melatonin at night time to tell you it's time to get rest, so your body can go ahead and repair itself.

Sometimes I go through phases where I find I don't get much sleep, yet I seem to cope. It's a built-in survival tactic that we have on us to cope with tough situations. Perhaps there's something troubling you, or you're overly excited, nervous or anxious over something? It's good to let that go, allow time and get rest though!

It may be wise to bring it up the next time you visit your doctor. I'd definitely discourage going on with this habit.

I learned a tenique from a US Marine, that you get a full nights rest from 2 hours of sleep. The only bad thing that is bad about this is that your metablisom gets all ZONKERS! This tenqnique actually requires you to make up by sleeping for a 24 cycle yes a 24 hour cycle I suggest you should probably go and do this cycle. If you want to. It is your choice whenever I have to study for finals I usually do this and take a "hibernation" period over the weekend. Hope this helps -Sid

I was like this for a while throughout this year. Running weeks on end with 2-4 hours of sleep on average each night. I don't know how long it carried on for exactly but a couple of months maybe, more? It all seems fine for a while but eventually it'll crash down on you and you'll feel exhausted. All I can do is enforce what others have already said. Try and set a time you go to sleep every night and get a good sleeping pattern down, it should help to even things out because as you know, it's not healthy.

I hadn't heard of this either but I practically slept for 24 hours the other night after a week of a fucked up sleeping pattern and it helped a lot, although the sleeping pattern is the same. It depends on if your body will let you, sometimes you just can't fall asleep no matter how hard you try, it's 7:50am right now, point proven. I'd recommend trying to catch up on missed sleep and letting your body recuperate as best it can though.
