Try looking to Alexander Calder's works, or Matisse's later works, for inspiration. I know that Calder wasn't a painter, but both of them I think bring great inspiration for anyone interested in abstract art. I'm especially a fan of Calder myself, his pieces opened the door for abstract art for me--before I saw them I really wasn't able to appreciate it, I just kind of wondered what it was :P Also, I might say try looking to everyday mundane objects for inspiration too, and see if you can come up with something based off of them. I'd love to see some of your works sometime!

Try overlapping geometrical shapes. Or you can drop eggs and draw that. Take something small in the world and enlarge it. Copy it, rotate it. twist it beyond recognition. Good luck.
