If you upgrade via the button in the settings menu, you won't lose any messages or anything.
Settings > General Settings > Software update.
Once you install it, you'll still have your messages.

^ Yep, this is correct.
Make sure you have sufficient space on your iPhone though, otherwise it won't be able to update, for my mum's iPhone 4S it was around ~1GB.

When iOS 6 just came out it wasnt an option at all... mainly. because of the new fuc*ing crappy mapping service apple came up with.. .. (but it does have a bunch of cool features)..
.. but now its different.. google released his own mapping app which is so much better than the one they had integrated in iOS 5.. and they also improved their youtube app.. which wasnt available in iOS 6 as well..

Not to mention that their own YouTube app carries it's on in-video adverts! YAY!

I actually don't mind the mapping service.....
For navigation I find it much better than the google maps- I'm not a fan of the google app, it really runs very poorly on my 3GS whereas Apple maps runs well.

yeah when iOS 6 came out I didn't update for the first month or so but then I gave in. I don't like the new maps (and the new google maps) or the new youtube. I guess I don't regret it though cause some parts of the update was good but it's a bit annoying with the maps and youtube

I reckon iOS 7 will be good- Seeing as though Scott Scott Forstall was fired and Jony Ive is now in charge- Real change is coming :)

Just because of the people talking about the YouTube app, try Jasmine. It's a light-weight YouTube app that does not have ads, does not have a "frontpage" (which is a plus for me), and you can play audio without having the app open. Downsides some people might see with it is Jasmine doesn't sync your viewed videos with your YouTube account and there's no suggestions when you're typing in the search bar.
However, it does not have ads and is a smaller file than the official YouTube app.

I have a 3GS that i am still on 5.1.1. I keep thinking of upgrading but mine is jailbroken and I have iBlacklist and a few other mods installed. I don't use YouTube so that would not be a problem.
I'm just waiting to see what the next iPhone will be since the 5 didn't interest me and I sold my 4S. New iPhone is rumored for sometime this summer.
