View Full Version : background music for profiles (no uploading needed)

Okay guys, I go to this other Vbulletin forum and it's similar to VT but you get music players on your profiles and you can then link an mp3 file to it and then it plays whenever people go to your profile.
all it does is just uses a link you specify to find the file so there isn't uploading to VT required.
What do you guys think?

I don't think it's appropriate for VT. Profile customization has been discussed before and has always been met with the "VT is a help site, not a social network" defense. This really has no purpose and could prove to be potentially annoying on VT.

Seems cool

It seems cool, but theres MP3's are about ~4-6MB long, and if we had space, I don't think the signature limit would be 50KB if VT could hold so much. Plus, it's a little un-needed on a help site. Good idea though!
Wonder.

Couldn't that easily be used as copyright infringement? You know most people wouldn't go out looking for free-use music, they'd just use their favorite song. Also, it's not really necessary and/or useful. It's an interesting idea, but I would be annoyed with music playing every time I went to someone's profile.

I mean, it sounds like a good idea, but you have to remember what this place is used for. It's a teen help site and while we can make it fun, it's easier to just keep it simple while very sweet.
Good idea though!

Music that auto plays on a web page is the worst thing ever.

I actually agree with HunterSteele here. It is extremely annoying when you load a page and you are blasted with music. Then you have to frantically search for the STOP button :D
It's a good idea, but I don't think it fits the theme of Virtual Teen, which is to be a help site.

I agree with the others. It's a horrendous idea. I'm sure a lot of us listen to iTunes or Pandora or whatever else while we visit this site. The last thing we'd need is someone's favorite song (which could be something the visitor detests) interfering with whatever the visitor is currently listening to.
I mean, I could upload some Hannah Montana song just to (probably) piss off quite a few visitors to my profile. What would the point in that be?

Reminds me of MySpace.
That's awful.

It's going to be one of these things where in the end, it's going to slow the site down. Because if you imagine if everyone had one, that's additional server space required...
and that would be irritating all round.

Eh, no.
I have my computer mute anyways, so I'll usually never hear the background music. I don't really see the point in adding this.

If you want to listen to music while on VT, there is this thing called a tab that allows you to have different websites open while on the same window and just go on youtube and listen to your own kind of music. Some trolls on this site will visit a members page and not like their taste in music and neg rep them for it. This will cause chaos for the admins because of the mass complaints of undeserving neg rep.
This is not needed, even in the slightest.

Good Idea but it wouldn't be useful

Totally agree with all of the above. I absolutely hate it when people have autoplay music on their tumblr pages.

Music on profiles on any site are the most annoying thing ever. Most of the time when this happened, I had no idea who it was in the song and it was a type of music that I was not interested in. Why force people to listen to crap?

I just want to give my input here..
First of all, music on profiles actually is a good idea, and the main fansites I do go on have this addition. However, the music also DOES auto start when you go to a user's profile.
However, in the User CP Edit Options, I made the option to disable auto start, so when you go to someone's profile with music, it is automatically not starting, and you need to press 'Play' to start the music.
Much better.
Now, the Admin team could either make it so we can enter our MP3 URL to play on our profile, which would be easiest, or allow their global mods or other staff to deal with song requests, and you PM them with your MP3 URL you'd like on your profile.
Honestly, I think music on profiles is awesome. It reminds me of the old MySpace before Facebook became the norm, and it allows users to express themselves.

First of all, vt is not a fan site. It's a help site. Second, as people have said, the connection will get slow as hell for slower connection speeds. Plus, nobody wants to be subject to musical propaganda on a profile page. And, who would really use it?

I never said VT is a fan site, lol. I'm just implying that the other forums I visit are fan sites, and they all have music on them, it doesn't matter if the forum is a fan site or a community forum or whatever type of forum it is, it's still a community, and communities should express themselves.. Kind of why we have Profile Customization (even though this isn't even enabled on VT, either..) and we also have avatars & signatures.. to express yourself and show people who you are. I think by, lets say, having your favorite song on your profile, people will get a glimpse of who you are (I know many people get to know eachother based on the music they like). About your connection speed... It has no influence on VT. It only has influence on the buffering of the song. It does take about 1 second or so longer to retrieve the music player for the user profile (grabbing QuickTime plugin), however, like I said, in the UserCP, there can be options to toggle Music Player functions, such as hiding it from profiles entirely, to disabling auto start, repeat, etc.
