Okay, I just got a ps2 slim for christmas and I want to know how I can run games off that external hardrive and how to softmod it to run homebrew.

I plan on installing linux to it so I have that as a pc sorta, the hardrive in my laptop is about to die so I burned a usb bootloader to my CD so I can be able to boot directly off my ubuntu flashdrive. but my laptop is 8 years old so its probably gonna not handle gaming well and my ps2 would double as a half-time low-end gaming PC, I have a spare hardrive. unfortunately it won't fit my laptop, its an IDE hardrive and not ATA hardrive.

ahhhh i know how troubleing this can be
go on youtube its actually pretty easy
all you have to do is take apart your playstation and tape down 2 buttons and thats it
but the how to video can help you better
my boyfriend recently modded our ps2 so now he can play games he downloads off the internet. its pretty easy but complicated at the same time. idk much about putting linux on it though idk if its possible. but who knows.. thats all i know about modding.

This is incorrect, and pirating games is illegal, you should know that.

If you want to mod your PS2, you'll need a way of transferring filesfrom your computer. You can try the memor32 memory card method (which is outdated) or the Action Replay save file method. Through this you will install an ELF loader, such as the one by Hermes (forgot the name of it, it was SwapDisc or something) and from that you can play games from other countries. If it's a fat ps2, there is a high chance you will be asked to open up the PS2, so you have to feel comfortable with not breaking the ribbon, there is no "tape down 2 buttons".

Have a memory stick handy. A lot of methods will be outdated, and the method I used was the Action Replay method. If you need any more help feel free to message me and I'll see what I can do.

Edit: The name is Called CogSwapLoader. have a google around and see if you understand what is required of you to do that.

Another Edit: About the linux thing, I haven't actually heard of this before. I did a Google Search and got this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_for_PlayStation_2 , some sort of kit or something, but I'm guessing you can find some files that can be loaded up to launch a PS2 linux distro.

There's two different methods you're talking about. You either tape down the X button (which is not neccesary) for temporary help or you tape up the laser sensor in the PS2 slim, but that's not a button. The taping doesn't actually do the modding though.

Is this (http://psx-scene.com/forums/f153/tutorial-detailed-slim-ps2-sensor-modding-swap-trick-disassembly-64925/) something you would find helpful?

Lol it's alright, modding is quite confusing work but you get the hang of it :)

theres a special softmod that allows you to run certain versions of linux on your PS2 but I was specificly looking into softmodding.

Untill I can get that modded, I think I'll use it as a media center. :)

in the meantime I'm going to watch a guy tear apart an 8 megabyte hardrive that costs about a a quarter of a million bucks. :P
