I always respond to threads through the 'New Posts' button. I like doing it because it's really convenient. Although, sometimes I respond to a thread that was just bumped up from like July or August by someone else. When I do that Am I breaking the rules? I don't ever try to post to a bumped thread. Sometimes I just don't look at the post date. It's accidental.

Really, the way I look at it, it really isn't your fault. Its the person who made the bump who is at fault. However people should check the posting dates but sometimes it isn't possible. I think it is safe to say that you wouldn't really get in trouble for replying to a bumped thread. If you were doing the bumping, it would be a different story, but since you are replying then there isn't really an issue. We just ask that everyone tries to remain vigilant.

Nope. I sometimes do that too. It's the person who did the bumping who broke rules.

I agree with Derri. When we leave those messages explaining why a thread was locked, it’s directed at the user who bumped the thread, not all of the users who posted afterward.
However, it’s important to look at post dates as well. For example, it couldn’t hurt to check the post dates on the last page of a thread to see if it was bumped recently. That way, you can report it, and we can get to it faster. Of course, we don’t ask you to read through the whole thread every time you want to reply - that would be impractical, and it could get quite annoying.
You won’t get penalized if you don’t check the dates, but it’s just an idea if you’d like.

The person bumping broke the rules. It is not your fault, and if anyone is to receive a punishment it will be the person who bumped the thread.
