(Sorry for brand dropping, just trying to help a friend)

Heya VT,

So a younger friend of mine has expressed interest in starting to shave. Unfortunately for her, her parents never really taught her how, and although I tried, she still managed to cut herself badly. I remember a few years ago that there was a guy razor with some "wires" over the blades to help them be safer, but i forgot the name.

We tried an electric razor on her, and she said "It hurts worse because it feels like it is pulling the hair out, and the vibrations tickle too much." And I certainly don't want to recommend veet or nair, because who wants to chemical themselves lol. And if the electric razor pulled to much hair, that means waxing is out too.

So I was wondering if you know a good razor to start on? Or if you can remember the name of the one with the wires lol. I use a Venus, but I also am not just starting out either. Ty for the info ladies!

You should tell her to not try again until the skin is fully healed if it isn't already, as well as any red bumps, let them go down too.

I use Bic Soilel right now or something like that, and I haven't had a problem, but we usually just grab any that look trustworthy. I think most razors are going to be the same, you should take her to the supermarket and read all the packages and pick the best one to try. Look for ones with a moisturizer bar at the top, and more blades because that's less irritating.

The way she shaves is going to her more than what she shaves with. Tell her to go in the same direction as the hair, and don't press really hard, just a little bit of pressure, and just let it glide, wash the hair caught in it after one or two strokes. The hair isn't going to come off all in one stroke like a lawn mower, you need to go over a few times.

If the hair is really long to begin with, then VERY CAREFULLY she could try to trim the excess with personal scissors. She should shave while in the shower, and after washing it and getting some dead skin off. You can get shaving cream, but I don't know anything about it and I wouldn't know where to start.

Hope this helps.

not knowing how young your talking about it's hard to give a good answer because the skin around that area is changing a lot during puberty. when i was 12 i started shing and got the rash almost every time but as i got older it was less fequent. i wax so i can go longer between events. in any case you should always use a new razor each time and it;s better if you do it towards a nice long hot bath and never hurts to use baby oil afterwards
