I love to sing and I'd really love to make it a career for myself. So I'm thinking about trying out for The X-Factor USA (a singing show that can make someone famous, for those who don't know). I really want to and people are always telling me I should but I just don't know if really should do it. Should I?

If you really want to, and you believe in yourself, then go ahead and do it.

Good luck. :)

What's the harm in trying out? If you're old enough you could try out for American Idol, it's a lot sooner.

I originally wanted to do American Idol but they had this coming seasons auditions this summer. And I'm one year too young for it. Lol! Plus I just don't think it's as good as it used to be.

Just like to point it out there, in general, the arts industries are very tough and competitive today. I'm not here to break your dreams and ambitions for you though, and if you're focused and dedicated, I do congratulate you and wish you the best for that!

Have you tried writing original songs, getting local performances and publishing stuff online yet? It's definitely easier to break it out into the public starting small, building a base and slowly gaining momentum than it is suddenly appearing at X-Factor or American Idol!

I love to write poetry and I'm sure I could turn it into a song if I needed to. And I've been in the choir at all of my schools I've ever been to which include schools in Colorado, North Carolina, and Arkansas and my choirs have given multiple performances while I've been in them. I'm on YouTube, though I need to redo some of those videos and improve it a bit. I've been in the Talent Shows at my schools every time there is one. I even won second place in a Talent Show that an organization held. Other than that, I have gone to some karaoke clubs. I actually sang karaoke on a cruise to Jamaica, Grand Cayan in the Cayman Islands, and Cozumel. I sang with a live band. And I've been singing all my life so I'm not really an inexperienced singer. In North Carolina, I went to a private music academy along with my public schools. I'm a straight A student and I'm in the Junior National Beta Club. The only thing with this career that I can't do yet is play an instrument, but I'm good at learning things and could learn if I had a teacher.

I come from a music family, so I will tell you FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS. Do it, if nothing else, it will be a great experience and maybe prepare you for your future. From my grandfather to me, we all play guitars. I never pass up a chance to play, no matter what it is or how small. If your passion is music, do it..do it any chance you get. Music can change the world because it changes people. Let your song be heard and touch the souls of many.

I had that dream as a kid. I always said immediately when I was old enough, I'd go do it.

Decided against it.

As I got older, I learned the difficult lesson that these people are looking for a particular brand of talent and are ignorant fools to the rest of it. Singing-wise, I mean. There's this common idea of what is a good voice and what is a bad voice but when I hear what they think is a good voice, I hear this monotonous, bland, run-of-the-mill singer. I've liked one singer that ever made it past auditions, and she left really early too, but she went on to join a rock band and tour. Overall, I just decided I was way too good for that shit, lol. Theatre is my calling.

I mean, of course try to achieve your dreams if you want to, but it's a lot of a hassle for a one-in-a-million chance. I'm more concrete that way. I like building resumes and attending lots of auditions. It's just that big talent shows like X-Factor, even the auditions, is a huge commitment for zero guarantees. You're there the whole day and they'll be brutally honest with you, which unless you're extremely seasoned and have taken a lot of criticism before, truly understand how to accept, utilize, and process it, can really destroy that flame for some people.

I would say, if you can be honest with yourself and realize that there may be many people far more talented than you and that you may not be selected for the show. If you can accept that possibility and know how to deal with the rejection/ disappointment, then I would say go for it. And if you don't make it on the show, just accept it as a learning/life experience and move on.
