I don't think any of them have the best voice in music history
I think the likes of Dean Martin and Nat King Cole are up there, but from post 50's Freddie beats the likes of John Lennon, I used JL as an example.
EDIT: Elton John has a lovely voice. Darn why did I forget him :(
This isn't an attack against John Lennon, I like his music and love the Beatles work too :P

It's very unlikely to be anyone from popular culture. Put them up against Caruso or Pavarotti and they wouldn't stand a chance.

Not that I am a fan of his type of music, but Placido Domingo is better than any pop or rock singer. Thanks grandma

I feel that Bjork has the greatest voice in music history. So versatile and unique yet beautiful!

In my opinion Layne Stayley does ( or used to, he was the lead vocalist of Alice in Chains, he died in 2002 ).

8 octaves is a piano,no one can sing all 8,last I heard she had a 5 octave voice, but there is a difference between singing and hitting a note, when it comes down to singing notes she's about 4,don't yell at me now, she's a really good singer, but not my taste :)
The best voices to me is Freddie Mercury and Robert Plant, not because of range, but the character of their voices, powerful, versatile and a bit sexual

Elton John would be right up there in my view.
No one will ever accurately answer this, to the point where everyone agrees, but I don't think to many people could deny Elton John deserving to be high up the order of this list.

Well, to know who has the "best" voice in all of music history which ranges all the way back since the paleolithic era, which was, lets just say a long time ago, I'm going to say the best vocal artist is someone we don't know. Hurr. What the fuck is with people saying Marriah Carrey and Paul McCartney? Ever been to a fucking opera or listened to gregorian chants before?

I would probably say David Coverdale or Bruce Dickinson. Obviously they won't be the best singers ever but in my experience they are and they have kept that talent even though they are both well over 50. Paul McCartney sounds horrible nowadays whereas both Dvid and Bruce both still sing as good if not better than they did in the 1980's.
