View Full Version : Lines Going Down My Monitor :(

I have an HP Pavilion zv5000 laptop computer, I've had it for about 3 years I think. (Stupid laptops are considered obsolete after 2 years...) But anyways, it all started with one blue line going down my screen and I just thought, eh, oh well. Then about 2 months later, a red line went down my screen, this is when it started getting irritating. Then a few weeks later, a green line starts going down my screen, and then the next day, a pink line starts going down my screen. Soon I will have a rainbow monitor. :yeah:
Anyways, I don't know what's causing this... When I move my monitor back and forth they go on and off, so I'm suspecting it's a hardware problem, not a software problem... Has anyone had this problem before and have they fixed it? Please help!

If there's a tech support line you can call I would recommend that first because laptop repair is risky and a pain in the ass.

If a laptop problem can't be fixed by phone support or for less than 200 bucks it's typically best to get a new one because self-repair can be very difficult and has the potential to destroy the laptop.

that happened with the computer i have now. my mum ended up getting a new ... i do not know what they are called though. i believe they are color cards that repair the distortions. mine is called nvidia.
i do not know how much yours would cost but for the one i use it was only 100, minus installation.

Hmm this might be because you put pressure on ur screen and its caused permanent damage.
An example if u dont under stand....if you press ur lcd/tft screen for about 3 seconds then let go...you should see a wee mark that fades away...I think maybe because there was pressure on it for so long its starting to cause permanent
This is just my guess I would call up the support line (should be in the instruction manual or online depending on make)

The video card. Nvidia is a company that produces the chips used on some of the cards. Laptop solutions are typically built into the motherboard, so he may not be able to replace it.

i would have never been able to figure that out for the life of me, thank you.
well, if that is what it is and the card cannot be replaced a new computer would be the option to go with...

Alright, thanks guys, but the problem is my computer is already considered "obsolete" so they won't help me. The guy on the phone literally said "Sorry, your laptop is obsolete and we cannot provide any support for you."

Laptops are considered obsolete after 2 years?! That's stupid; people are not made of money.

Look at it this way, you can get the same speed for half the price or twice the speed for the same price.

What it sounds like to me, is either:
A.) The LCD is bad
B.) The Ribbon Connecting the LCD to the Motherboard is loose or bad.
If it kind of goes away when you move the LCD, it might indicate that the Cable is just loose.
I'd look into checking the Cable, if at all possible.
If it was a Video Card Problem, it'd also do it if you plugged a monitor into the VGA output. If it doesn't, it's either the Ribbon, or the LCD itself.
If you were planning on getting a new laptop anyway, if you have any confidence in yourself when it comes to taking things apart, and putting them back together, you might try taking it apart and checking the connections to the LCD. It looks like there are 2-3 connections, at least looking at a picture of the LCD. There are also LCDs for it for around 100-130$ on eBay. Hook it up to VGA monitor, no lines going down monitor. I'd take it apart, but I don't know how, and I can't find any guides online on how to do it.

Well, usually, there's just lots of Screws, and At times, different parts snap into one another.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00212209.pdf
That might be of some help.
Just, whatever you do, do NOT tug at something if it won't come loose. There's either a screw or a snap in thingy somewhere. I know someone that did that, and broke his entire laptop.
Also, Pay attention to the Screws, and where things go. Many Laptops have Labels on the Casing like "K" "C" etc for Keyboard, or Case, and are Different Size Screws.
If you have any problems with it, and don't feel comfortable doing it, don't. You could potentially get it so you have no idea how to put it back together. You can always plug a monitor into it, or Potentially get it fixed by someone else down the road.
This is how I started fixing laptops. I had a bad one, and pulled it apart one day. Managed to get it back together right, for the most part. Sometimes I end up with an extra screw or two, but for the most part, it's good.
