China concern over school attacks

A man with a knife has wounded 22 children - at least two of them seriously - and an adult at a primary school in central China.

The attack happened at the gate of a school in Chenpeng village in Henan province.

Police arrested a 36-year-old local man at the scene.

Security at China's schools has been increased in recent years following a spate of similar knife attacks in which nearly 20 children have been killed.

The BBC's John Sudworth in Shanghai says many of the attackers have been mentally disturbed men, prompting a debate about the effects of China's recent, rapid social change and the inability of an antiquated hospital system to cope with rising levels of mental illness.

The Associated Press news agency quotes a police officer as saying that this latest attack happened as pupils were arriving for classes.

The agency also quotes a county hospital administrator as saying that the man first attacked an elderly woman, then the children, before being overpowered by security guards.

He added that two of the injured pupils had been transferred to better-equipped hospitals outside the county.

There's really tight media and social network control, so it's natural that news don't spread quickly.

Exactly. I mean, I do understand where you're coming from, OP. But you have to remember that the US is the one with all the huge media that make stories go viral like wildfire. China doesn't really have as much media covering stories nor do their stories get as popular. Really, the most popular story happening in China is the Tibet issue with the self-immolations and the Chinese government trying to stop them. But that's because it's a human rights issue. It is sad that other countries seemingly get neglected when breaking news stories come out that don't get as much attention as US ones.

Why is it remarkable? 22 people were injured in this, whereas in Connecticut, 27 people were killed. It is the 2nd worst school massacre in the United States. Why do you find it remarkable that far less serious events from China are not recorded in the same mass? Have you not seen yet that Western people care about Western things? Just in the way you'd care more if members of your family died than strangers, Westerners care more about Westerners than other people. The same goes in China; the Connecticut shooting will be reported nowhere near as much (except potentially for propaganda).

Besides, if you find this surprising, Obama was crying to news reporters about the Connecticut shooting while the United States is bombing scores of innocent civilians, including women and children, in the Middle East and African countries. You have used a poor example of a socially implicit idea that Westerners care more about Westerners. I am surprised you have not caught onto that, as you are undoubtedly "guilty" of it too. Everyone needs to identify to something, whether it be the West, the American continent, the United States, Connecticut or Newtown. It's group loyalty and it's a psychological trait.

Can't we just mourn for the victims without discussing politics.
Thank god the Chinese man only had a knife and not an arsenal of firearms where their could have been alot more deaths and injuries. But even one death is tragic. People are sick twisted creatures.

Awful. Could have been worse though - he could have used guns..but still horrible :/

I remember there were a ton last year in China too...all with the attacker using knives I think. :/

Awful. I heard about this around the time I heard about Sandy Hook.
At least nobody was killed, thank whatever deity/ies you choose to worship (or not)
