Wow, I'm in the same boat as you dude. If you're comfortable, talk to him about it, but if not, try to warm up to him, and take it from there. I myself am not comfortable enough to discuss things like that to MY crush, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to.

I'd suggest talking to him. Start up a conversation and see where it takes you, a good tip would be to find out what he is interested in and strike up a conversation that way or find out if he is apart of any club or activity and you could join that club or start a conversation from that and see where it leads too.

Ah, that might have been something to mention when you made the first post.

If you don't know if he is bi or gay then you can't really do much other than ask or use your best judgement.

Although sometimes if you do ask out someone who isn't bi/gay it can have a very awkward outcome which could mean you loose what little friendship you have with said person. Is there some way you might be able to tell?

Honestly I don't know how you'd be able to tell. Other than the obvious of asking him or asking people who really know him.

Overall I if it were me. I'd probably leave it until I knew if he was bi/gay because the fact is, if you asked him he might take offence or he might find it awkward to be around you and this just leaves you heart-broken.
