Sound Menu isn't working

Okay, I've been trying to see if I can get the output from my VCR to be recorded through my microphone jack. But when I go to the sound menu to see if the microphone input is working the entire system seems to freeze, does anyone know what is causing this to occour? :what:

You have to realise that just because you can plug something into somewhere, doesn't mean it will work. A microphone jack sends "phantom power" to the microphone, at a voltage that I don't know(+48V?). In addition, it's another pin interface altogether, so it's unlikely that you'll get any sound through it.

As for your computer freezing, I assume it's an error in your sound card driver(or probably GStreamer on GNU/Linux).

What are you trying to accomplish, anyways?
