Prosecutors in the Netherlands say they will charge three players in connection with the death of a linesman in a Sunday league football match.

The two 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old will face broad charges in connection with the death of Richard Nieuwenhuizen.

The three remain in custody ahead of their court appearance on Thursday.

The prosecutor's office said the investigation was continuing and witnesses were still being questioned.

Mr Nieuwenhuizen had been running the line for his son's team, Buitenboys. After the match he was attacked by members of the opposition, the Amsterdam club Nieuw Sloten.

He collapsed hours after the assault, fell into a coma and died in hospital on Monday.

The Dutch Football Association has cancelled all amateur matches for the coming weekend as a mark of respect for Mr Nieuwenhuizen. A minute's silence will be observed at professional games.

The assault has been widely condemned in the Netherlands. Sports Minister Edith Schippers, the Dutch FA and the coach of the country's most famous club, Ajax, have expressed disbelief and outrage.

And Sepp Blatter, the president of the world governing body, Fifa, has written to the president of the Dutch FA to express his "sadness and distress".

"Football is a mirror of society and sadly, the same ills that afflict society - in this case violence - also manifest themselves in our game, " Mr Blatter added.

Nieuw Sloten said it intended to ban for life the players found to be responsible, that it had pulled their team from the league and temporarily suspended all its operations as a club.

What do you guys think of this? I think it's sick, it gives football and people that play football an undeserved bad reputation.

I saw something about this. It sounds like they really jumped on it from the sports side of it. I thought I read that the club had been booted out of the league for the season too but I can't see that above.

This sort of reaction is a sad reflection of the mentality of some who see affiliations in football as a rallying flag for thuggish behaviour. Winning at all costs - it reminds me of the Penn state child abuse scandal and all the cover ups within their ranks. Where is the honour and sporting fun in these people's hearts?

This is horrible! RIP to the kid, and I hope the kids who attacked him get the help they need and the punishment they deserve.

Oh, this has been going on for years. Even amongst the fans. Here is just one incident that got a little extreme. After most football games there are small fights in the streets or whatever.
My parents tell me of some stadiums(usually for the really big matches) where the different fans were literally placed in cages -- one team's supporters in one cage, the opponents in another -- with lots of burly men with riot control stuff walking about them.
The fans of the "home" team could not leave the stadium until the last train containing the "guest" team had departed.
Some people take things there way too seriously. And it's not just the Moroccans(the reason for me adding that is a long story).

I went kind of viral in my country, belgium, the country next to the netherlands. Most people were really shocked though, i feel bad for the linesman, i dont fully agrea that its only the morrocans, because its not, :) Its easy to say that its someone not of your country, i wont dissagree that they might make some more mistakes, but they already get hated on before they did anything, there was a program on tv 4 months ago, and the people of poland, etc, were real douchebags, they faught alot, still RIP linesman :'(
