View Full Version : Can you be hospitalised for self harm behaviour?

Lately I've been feeling like I should tell my school councilor that I self harm, but I'm worried that she's going to have to tell my parents. But my mum dates a guy whose job is to talk people out of committing suicide and stuff (sorry I have forgotten what the job title is). But he has the ability and authorisation to put me in hospitla so I'm freaking out that if my mum finds out, he'll find out and get me hospitlised. But I guess I want to know if you can be hospitalised even if you don't cut 'deep', is the intent still enough to hospitalise you? What happens if you get hospitlised and how crazy do your parents get, like do they suddenly always start checking in on you to make sure that you are not 'harming yourself?
Sorry about the random jumps in my questions and the restating of them in like every question

Yes, you can be hospitalized for any type of self-harm, and honestly it sucks, at least in my experience.
But I still think you should talk to somebody about your self-harming, and explain that you don't want to be hospitalized, maybe just see a counselor, or talk to your mom's boyfriend if you think he could help you, but explain to him that you would prefer your mom not know about it and that you don't want to be hospitalized.

I've no personal experience, but from what I understand, yes you can be hospitalized for self harm. I'm not sure if intent alone is grounds for hospitalization, but if they think you're going to do serious damage to yourself they might. That's just in the states though, not sure how things work in australia.

Self harm care here in Britain is excellent, if you lived here then I would suggest you to get hospitalized. There is a danger of causing extreme damage every time you cut, there are people in the hospital who can help you and find alternative ways of dealing with your pain.
As for your parents, well it's their job to make sure that you are okay. I know that I would be extremely disappointed in myself as a parent if my child felt the need to self harm instead of talking to me.

Well from my experience you can if there is a danger that you will cause sever damage to yourself
But even if there isn't any danger of that I'd recommend you talk to someone,a person who's so troubled that they harm themselves need to talk to someone,it helped me a lot to talk to someone and hopefully it would for you too :)

i didnt know u could get hospitilased for self harm.. but i know in australia thye have changed the laws so that counsellors (such as school counsellors) dont have to tell anyone that ur self harming so ur parents dont have to be told, this has only just come in, and not to sure if its around the whole of australia or just in queensland.

That's really good to hear.
Here (in the uk) its really rare to be admitted to hospital just for self harm. You'd need to have a whole bunch of other problems or be a danger to yourself. (I just came out of hospital and really it wasn't that bad, not like i imagined it to be) Admitting someone to hospital just for self harming seems like a total over reaction.
Why don't you go and talk to your school counsellor, you don't even have to say its about you, just ask them about confidentiallity and what kind of things they'd need to pass on to your parents. Then you'd know for sure.

I think it is great that you want to tell someone about SI and I think you should...even if your mom finds out maybe you should talk to her not to get hospitalized but to go to the therapy or sth like that. Good luck with everything
