Being friends with her is better than the opposite, but if you got too kind of buddyish with her, I could see it becoming weird for him. i.e., wondering where the boundary is of what you would discuss with his mum, etc.

My mum is weird. She will really like a girl, and go on about how nice she is, and how pretty, etc., then if I tell her I am going out with that girl, she gets suspicious of her. She never says anything, but I can tell.
