Hey VT, so my friend's 10 year old brother was asked what he wants for Christmas, and he decided that he would like a Kindle. I've never used one, but the reason I bring up his age, is a matter of sturdyness. Will a regular black and white Kindle handle day to day usages of someone that young, or would you suggest a case?
Also, any tips on a case *if you think he needs one* for under like $30 usd? I'm pretty sure leather is out, but something like silicone vs cloth vs generic or whatever.
Thanks!

i had a kindle in 6th grade (later passed it to my sister when i got an ipad). In my opinion they are very sturdy. The screen isnt glass so it wont shatter, it is more of a hard plastic. It is also very light so if dropped there wont be much force behind it. A good case would be one of those cases that folds like a book with the kindle inside. I will add a link below in about five minutes or so. I think as long as you tell him to use it carefully and take good care of it you shouldnt have a problem. A fun new way to get a child reading!:D
Link for case:

This is the case i had, it works great.

For someone that age, I would definitely recommend a case, simply as a precaution. Like Preston said, Kindles are fairly sturdy, they've always worked very well in the times that I've used them. I would probably go for something more like silicone as opposed to cloth, but it's really up to you. I think that he would be able to take good care of it, and that overall it's a great idea! My Kindle has held up without a case, but like I said, it would be best to get one just as a precaution.

The case i recomended is very stiff. I would also not recomend a cloth case, but more of a silicone or stiff case as i had

Be sure to get a screen protector as well, and most cases due run a pretty penny, so do look at Amazon & eBay for a cheap one.

Just wanted to update, we did get him a kindle, but instead of buying a case, we actually made one!
We used a nice suede lining for the inside of the front and back, and that was sewn into cloth, and then we added cardboard for strength. the "outside" cover is a firmer leather, since it seemed more resilient. The corners of the case is some neoprene, kinda layered though (we only found small strips, so we had to fold it) and the "spine" is made up of the neoprene and suede. It actually provides a really decent amount of protection, and it only cost us $10! A local leather shop was getting rid of scrap materials, and kindly donated to us, score!
We used fine point markers and drew designs on it, and then cut them out with a sharpie so they look etched into the leather too.
Anyway, thank you all for your suggestions! They spawned our creative ideas.

That's a beautiful idea!
Now if he does misplace it it will be obvious it belongs to him AND he has a personal case to cherish for the life of the kindle.
It's people like you who make my day, honestly :3
