Secession petitions filed in 20 states (http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/secission-petitions-filed-20-states-190210006.html)
In the wake of last week's presidential election, thousands of Americans have signed petitions seeking permission for their states to peacefully secede from the United States. The petitions were filed on We the People, a government website.
States with citizens filing include Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Oddly, folks from Georgia have filed twice. Even stranger, several of the petitions come from states that went for President Barack Obama.
The petitions are short and to the point. For example, a petition from the Volunteer State reads: "Peacefully grant the State of Tennessee to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government." Of all the petitions, Texas has the most signatures so far, with more than 23,000.
Of course, this is mostly a symbolic gesture. The odds of the American government granting any state permission to go its own way are on par with winning the lottery while getting hit by a meteor while seeing Bigfoot while finding gluten-free pizza that tastes like the real thing.
An article from WKRC quotes a University of Louisville political science professor who explained that these petitions aren't uncommon. Similar petitions were filed following the 2004 and 2008 elections. Still, should the petitions garner 25,000 signatures in a month, they will require an official response from the Obama administration.
From the We the People site:
The right to petition your government is guaranteed by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. We the People provides a new way to petition the Obama Administration to take action on a range of important issues facing our country. We created We the People because we want to hear from you. If a petition gets enough support, White House staff will review it, ensure it's sent to the appropriate policy experts, and issue an official response.
Not everybody who wants to secede is polite enough to write a petition. Peter Morrison, treasurer of the Hardin County (Texas) Republican Party, wrote a post-election newsletter in which he urges the Lone Star State to leave the Union.
"We must contest every single inch of ground and delay the baby-murdering, tax-raising socialists at every opportunity. But in due time, the maggots will have eaten every morsel of flesh off of the rotting corpse of the Republic, and therein lies our opportunity... Why should Vermont and Texas live under the same government? Let each go her own way in peace, sign a free trade agreement among the states and we can avoid this gut-wrenching spectacle every four years."

To me this just typifies the stereotype of the arrogant self-righteous bullies that are the biggest credibility problem the Republicans have.

Don't kid yourself. Texas would be the first to do so. They could do it easily. They have public support and amazingly have prepared to leave the USA long ago.
For example, if the national electric grid were to fail, Texas wouldn't lose power. They are the only state that has it's own self contained, self sustained grid that doesn't connect to the national grid. For many years, Texans have made choices and plans to leave, should they feel the need to.
Think about it. They have easy access to the ocean, so free trade wouldn't be a problem. They have their own power grid and can generate far more than they use, so if they wanted to sell it to Oklahoma, they could. They are ideally located to get clean solar power too. They have tons of room to farm, they have several high tech cities. Their only concern would be clean water to deal with the drought and sea water can be desalinated using their cheap and abundant electricity.
If California ever decided to leave, they would have the second largest economy in the world. Second only to the USA. THAT's amazing to me that they're that big and that productive.
If you look at the fifty states, there are givers and their are takers. I'd say Texas is a giver and Vermont is a taker. If you really look at it, not many states could make it on their own, but the south east as a group certainly could. I think the "giver" states are sick of the "taker" states and at some point, there may be a split because for every dollar America makes, it spends $1.41, so we can only continue doing that for a while longer and the giver states will reach a point of not wanting to support the taker states. Just like European Union and Greece or Spain.
It certainly would be different not being bound by two oceans, Canada and Mexico. Not sure it would be better though.

Don't kid yourself. States have seceded in the past and failed, it called the Civil War. Each State has a militia, but a bunch of regulars vs. The US military I wounder who would win. It doesn't matter if they can sustain themselves, which they can't, the US can easily invade and take over.
States cannot sustain themselves without the "mainland". Once a state secedes it becomes it own country. The state legislature will turn into a federal one. If they decide to be a republic. There will be riots, many people will die! You don't know how the transitional government works, do you? It is more complex than you think.
Congress will deny any foolishness like this, A state cannot just secede that is is not how our country works. Because you should know what your talking about before you say something.
All state provide to this union so it is stupid for you to think that there are "taker" states and "giver" states. In fact I believe anyone who believes in that rubbish is also stupid.
Yes, Texas has oil, but they won't be able to use any of our refineries, The US will annex the gulf of Mexico it deserves from Louisiana. Texas will not get any part of the Keystone XL pipe line if it passes. The US will remove all investments in that state. They can no longer use the US dollar. They would have to tax the hell out of everything just to fund the state since they will not have any help from the USA. The state will have to go bankrupt, people will eventually die from starvation.
Seceding is a foolish idea, and the people who pursue it are also very, very foolish.

It is quite illegal. During the whole Civil War the Union government never recognized the Confederate government as a legitimate government, effectively saying that the states didn't have a right to secede. That's typically the view held today.

Merely stating that this is stupid and giving no reasoning to why a state "shall ever again secede from the union" makes you sound ignorant. Instances in developed countries of where a region (or state) wanting to secede from their country are still happening. Catalonia in Spain and Scotland in the UK are just two examples of where there are supporters of secession from their country that they're currently apart of.
If California ever decided to leave, they would have the second largest economy in the world. Second only to the USA. THAT's amazing to me that they're that big and that productive.
They're not that large economically. They would be probably around the tenth largest worldwide, since their GDP is currently 1.9$ trillion. But you must take into account that California is the largest state of the US with a population of around 37,600,000. That's about 12-13% of the US's population. It's kind of expected that they'd have fairly large economically unless their population was made up of mostly babies or elderly people.
You guys do know that these are all radical right-wings that are doing these petitions are only in protest for Obama being the US's president for a second term? It's about 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% likely to happen because Congress would have to approve it.

No where does it explicitly say in the Constitution, Bill of Rights or a court case that it is illegal to secede from the Union. This was a different time period. And one president basically said it was not OK for this to happen and that he needed to protect the Union. Nothing (on a large scale) has come ever come up again about states wanting to secede from the Union. You're right about one thing, though. It is a view typically still held today. Views can change, however. Ideas about Independence and freedom that this country was found on could make a come back to possibly new countries in the future.

So what do states like Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island and New Hampshire really bring to the table? I know Boston built a 5 billion dollar tunnel that the feds i.e. everyone else paid for yet gain nothing from having it.
Texas, California, Georgia, the south east in general would be just fine w/o having to foot the bill for all the waste in the older cities. Again, Calif all on it's own would be the eighth largest economy in the world. Break out a map or use wiki and think about it a while. Calif has how many ports? They have a valley that can more than feed itself, silcon valley for tech. They'd be just fine.
The states that are looking to leave would do so legally, not by war or at least that's what they are looking into.

These states seceded into a confederation, which has a large state government and minimal federal government. What if just one state seceded into it's own country PEACEFULLY.
States cannot sustain themselves without the "mainland". Once a state secedes it becomes it own country. The state legislature will turn into a federal one. If they decide to be a republic. So you're basically saying that when the US wanted to break away from Britain, the US couldn't sustain itself? But then you're going to say "Oh but Great Britain was a tyrannical country who had a king who was a bad man!" Well if we used a military like Britain did to try to force a state back into the Union, wouldn't that be tyrannical and oppressive too?
Congress will deny any foolishness like this, A state cannot just secede that is is not how our country works. Because you should know what your talking about before you say something.
Obviously they would deny "any foolishness like this" but a state can in fact secede from the Union. Obviously it already happened with many states. The word you're probably looking for is should. A state should not secede from the Union.
All state provide to this union so it is stupid for you to think that there are "taker" states and "giver" states. In fact I believe anyone who believes in that rubbish is also stupid.
I have no argument to present on this, as I agree.

Again, you have many speculations here. Yes, they would probably get off to a rocky start as a country. But so did the US when it seceded from Britain.
Seceding is a foolish idea, and the people who pursue it are also very, very foolish.
Again, saying this means that you're contradicting yourself because this is how the US was founded. By seceding from Britain.

My bad! Just found this on Wiki. They'd be the 8th largest economy: As of 2010, the gross state product (GSP) is about $1.9 trillion, the largest in the United States.[90] California is responsible for 13 percent of the United States' gross domestic product (GDP). As of 2010, California's GDP is larger than all but seven countries in the world (all but ten countries by Purchasing Power Parity)
And you're right. It's the right wingers behind it and I know it wont happen, but it's kinda cool that there are provisions for it and that Texas and the USA have an agreement already in place for years and years that gives them the option of leaving. The rest of the States would have to pass legislation or fight.

The US of course can sustain themselves. We have a land ripe for natural resources and fertile land, as a whole! If A a state leaves they will lack several resources to survive or want. And when American don't get want they want... riot!
It has been so long since state were individual colonies. Since then we have worked together for a long time. It was the vision of our founding fathers, it tried to be broken, but it did not work. The mere fact can* secede, doesn't mean they should. I also doubt that it was the state themselves to file for such a stupid thing. It was just probably, some whacked up republican that got all butthurt that they lost.

Peacefully!? are you kidding me! The US can't do anything peacefully, there is some thing called the freedom to Assemble, and believe me people will assemble, and some with violence.
So, what was the Civil Rights movement? A bunch of violence for African Americans and other races to obtain their needed rights? Sure there were several incidents of violence that happened during this time period, but they were mostly caused by people who were against change. Hell, the KKK even has the right to peacefully march down the street in a large city as long as there is no violence started. The freedom to Assemble means that people must do it peacefully, without violence and without breaking laws. Once any of these are broken, then your rights are taken away and you're arrested. Saying that the US can't do anything peacefully is a sad remark. A riot is different from peacefully assembling - which happens way more than riots.
The US of course can sustain themselves. We have a land ripe for natural resources and fertile land, as a whole! If A a state leaves they will lack several resources to survive or want. And when American don't get want they want... riot!
What's to say that a state couldn't sustain themselves? Look at Europe and the different European countries. Many various European countries lack some resources. They either trade to get more or conserve. And they conserve a hell a lot better than the US as a whole. This whole view that you have how Americans "riot" is getting a bit old. You're making the US sound like a country that "riots" about every damn thing. You're confusing riots with peacefully assembling.
It has been so long since state were individual colonies. Since then we have worked together for a long time. It was the vision of our founding fathers, it tried to be broken, but it did not work. These petitions were obviously started because of radical Republicans - I mean, that's a given. And just because it didn't work once, it doesn't mean that it will never work. History has a way of repeating itself.
seceding for no legitimate reason is flat out stupid!
It may be an illegitimate reason to you, but who's to say it's not for them or any other state/region that would like to secede.
*This "Can" is debatable, I don't think it "can"
How is it debatable? The word "can" (in the form verb, obviously) means to be able to do something.
So let me ask you this. Can I go smoke pot right in front of a cop? So in other words, am I able to do that? Why, yes I can and I am able to do so. I'm able to obtain weed fairly easily (not legally, obviously). I'm able to smoke it. I'm able to walk up to a cop and pull a joint out and smoke it right in front of him/her. So, really, the question is not "can I do it" it's "should I do it." And that answer would obviously be no, because I'd get arrested. Can a state secede from the Union? Yeah. It obviously happened with several states back in the Civil War for only a short period of time. Should a state do it? I'd say not, because military action would be taken against it because it's considered a "national security." The word "can" is really an abused word in the English language. If you are able, then you can. But it doesn't mean that you should do it.

Well, it's official. Petitions have now been filed in all 50 states for secession. Let's take a look at the numbers though, shall we? The United States has a population of approximately 314,767,409 people, and the petitions have been signed by a little over 700,000 people throughout all 50 states. Being generous and (since it's over 700,000 signatures) bumping that up to 800,000 people signing the petitions, that means that 0.25% of Americans support secession. That's really not a whole lot. And, Rick Perry, the governor of the state which has garnered the most signatures (Texas), has spoken out and said that he is completely opposed to secession. So, again, I'm fairly confident that nothing is really going to come out of these petitions.

Well if you think you know "a little more about the Civil Rights Movement" then you should also know that Malcolm X's ideas did not concur with those of Dr. King's philosophies. His were not the only philosophies of the Civil Rights Movements but they were, perhaps, the most outspoken and heard. Malcolm X and others who believed that violence was the answer were not apart of Civil Rights Movements because these movements were peaceful, civil, and non-violent. Malcolm X's were not.

Just because you people want a country where African Americans are slaves again, women are submissive to men once more, homosexuals are slaughtered because they are different, Native Americans are forced to leave their home, Creationism is a requirement, and Christianity is the national religion. America is moving forward, and it's time progress took over hatred and ignorant bigotry. Ok, I will actually say this and not hold back and if I offend people, oh well. But grow up you Republicans! Quit being ignorant just because your bigoted candidate didn't win. So all you whining little ignorant babies need to shut up and learn to move on and accept diversity and progress.
End of my rant. Neg rep me all you want!
you are the most bigoted person i've ever met on this site. you are just always complaining about people are hating on you but almost every post you have is like "i hate republicans" or "liberals oh yeah!" and all you ever do is talk about how YOU are right and anyone who doesn't believe in what you do is wrong. i don't get you. at all.

I think it's just the die-hard right wingers are mad because Mitt Romney lost. While I can't say it's a great thing to have Obama, it's better him than Romney.

I had to read this part 3 times before I understood it. If you're getting tired of re-posting over and over again, then that's kind of sad seeing as to how you only have to click a few buttons and type in what you want to say.
No, because the debate of whether or not a state/region can secede from the Union is clearly over. You've changed the topic to something else.
You know what, I don't care anymore. I have laid out my opinion, an several facts to back it up. States should not secede from the union just because Romney lost. He was going to lose from the beginning, sorry if that comes to a shock but its true.
So goodbye, I see there is no way on hell and on earth that i can change your mind, Because you obviously want to secede because you got all butthurt!
Goodbye

Clearly you are the one who got butthurt.
Anyway, I think this happens every election. Nothing special.

They don't want to leave. The petitions are purely symbolic. They didn't want Obama to win. I think this has happened for every recent election (ever since Clinton).

Even if these states seceded, they'd come back in a few months tops. It's the equivalent of a teenager running away from home, but only getting to the end of block before coming back home when no one even noticed they were gone.

I personally think that with the direction our president is taking the country states will secede from the union. Our debt is too high (thanks to Bush and Obama), and there is too much party politics to get anything done. I personally do not believe in socialism and communism, but i fear America is leaning that direction. With that in mind, the southern states cound and should secede. I'll gladly move from Ohio to Texas if they left.

Petitions are petitions. These just mean that a couple people are mad that their side lost. Nobody is seceding. There would be no way any of the states could sustain themselves as their own country.

It's just a petition. They work in smaller scales, like town wide or something. But not state wide. It'll die out by next month.

It wouldn't work well at all.
