Either way there's a definite taste difference. Roaches are coated in resin from the rest of the already smoked marijuana. And resin tastes like burnt ass hole. Not just ass hole, burnt ass hole.

It tastes like shit... It's like cigarettes, if you have a half burnt one it will taste really really bad...
If you have one of those in your room it will wreck of that smell...

So you're talking about cigarettes right? Roach typically refers to the last bit of a joint after it's been smoked, hence the above confusion. Sorry if I'm wrong, but idk who would smoke pot with a filter anyway, so I'm guessing you're talking about cigs.

Yeah, there's a huge difference. Without a filter is a hell of a lot harsher. I can't smoke them without. I even notice the taste when I nick one of my dad's light filters. Although, those are also ones he's rolled himself, and even with a normal filter there's a terrible taste difference. But yeah, I don't like cigarettes without a filter, they're pretty rank.
