The other day if had my first period. I didn't have any pads or tampons so it went on my panties. It's 13 a common age to start periods , what age did you start?
I was wondering how do I get a hold of pads or tampons (which is better?) because it will be really awkward in a shop a 13y/o buying tampons. Therefore how do I say to my mum I've started my periods can you get me some tampons/ pads? I would the the worlds' most awkward convocation ever!
Also when I had my period it was pretty painful. Is this because its my first or will this pain be continuous?
Finally, how much blood do you bleed (please give approximate numerical value)
thanks
P.s. because my period was quite painful is there a chance I have endometriosis?

I started my period when I was 12, my sister did when she was 11, one friend didn't get it until 15, and another friend got when she was just 8! The age you get your period at does not matter. :)
To start out, definitely get pads. You should tell your Mum, remember she went through the exact same thing you did. Menstruation is completely normal and natural. It's nothing to feel awkward about. Try medium absorbancy first. if they fill up too quickly, go for a high absorbancy one, if if fills up quite slow, go for something smaller. The pads may be uncomfortable at first, but they do get better.
For the pain, you should stock up on some on the shelf pain killers, if over the next couple of times it's really bad and the mild pain killers don't work, you should go to the doctor (hopefully with your Mum) and see if you can get a prescription for something stronger.
For some girls, periods are just really painful. Some girls get it occasionally, others every time. Your pain may wear off as your body adjusts, it may not. You'll find out in time. It doesn't necessarily mean you have a disease, but if you're worried, get checked out by a doctor. :)

Definately tell your mom, she will get you some and show you which to get and yes get the pads first then change to tampons. Midol works for me or just asperine and it may have just been cramps and now always carry two tampons or pads and an extra pair of panties in your bag or in you school locker at least.

Yes, I believe I started at 13 too if not almost at 13.

For your first period, I'd suggest pads for a while because tampons can be scary and require some practice, but it really depends on how comfortable you are.

Hah, I feel you; when I got mine, I was with my dad, so I had to tell him which was kind of worse. Parents are pretty understanding, especially your mother, so the best thing to do is just to come out and say, "Mom, I think I got my period, may I please have some pads?" as soon as possible. It might be awkward, but you'll be thankful that you did it and it needs to be done.

Every girl's symptoms vary. The pain might not recur, or it might, or it might fluctuate; there's no way to tell. When I first got my period, I had no symptoms, but now I get stomach aches and cramps, and sometimes I don't.
Finally, how much blood do you bleed (please give approximate numerical value)
I don't pay attention.
thanks

I wouldn't worry about that yet. It's only your first period and symptoms are expected and can vary in severity and frequency.

i started when i was 12
i mistook cramps for food poisoning thats how unprepared i was.
just take some midol(it helps relieve cramps) or go visit a doctor see if he will prescribe you anything for the pain. green tea helps...
and yes you need to talk to you mom. she will be able to help you through it... she wont be mad at you afterall its not your fault you got your period. she has experience for more years than u so she is the best person to talk to..... although i know how u feel regarding buying your own products. it can be embarassing especially when you dont know what ones to buy. i didnt start buying my own till 14...... but by then i felt more comfortable with it... dont feel bad
there are girls as young as 8 who start..my little sister is 10 and shes already starting to show signs. its perfectly normal.. its hereditary......just go with it

13 is about the average age and as far as what you use is really a personal prefrence. i use tampons during the day but never keep them in over night and at night i use a pad. Try both and you'll figure it out soon enough. Don't sweat ove having to ask your mom if you, it's really no big deal going into a store and buying pads or tampons and no one is going to stop in the isles and say look that girls buying tampons or pads. sorry it's just not that big of a deal in this day and age

Great advice here, I started when I was about 13, I recommend pads at first, always remember to be packed with pads or tampons espially if ur near that time, ask ur friends questions too, girls that is, one time one of my friends went through the same thing you did and her pants were ruined but I was shocked how all of us sprang up and helped her and gave her like their shorts from their lockers
