You know what? At 5 words a second this is more of a rant.
Does it annoy anyone else how pop is basically manufactured and you get crappy little boyband dickheads like The Wanted and One Direction making money because they 'look good'?! It's just god damn unbelieveable! When i refer to pop (I am aware pop refers to popular music like rock too, im specifically referring to mainstream pop, you know, 4 chords in a song, same word repeated repeated repeated because they cant think of a rhyming lyric) i refer it to as the S**t industry because thats what it is. X Factor is a god damn abomination too, you hear them say it, they are looking for a recording artist who will S E L L. Oh, so its not about singing then?
You know what, it just annoys me that there is no talent anymore. I think that's why I like the music that I do, because I know thought has been put into it, and that if it is performed live, ITS AMAZING! Instead of watching some poxy idiot/idiots dancing around in the latest fashion and trying to breathe and sing and maintain a tune.
Just, GRRRRRRRR
I know this seems like an attack on those that I've mentioned but those are just prime examples of the kind of people I'm talking about.

everything is about money.
When you dig deeper in certain genres you will find really great bands that aren't popular like the ones are but still really really good. Some of them are actually giving their all albums for free at their websites. They're giving you a choice to download or buy it to support them.
I've found really good bands I've never knew before but when you look below the big bands you'll find good ones under them.

The pop music industry is exactly that: An industry. The main objective of an industry is to make money, not creative or artistic expression.
I don't really understand what the problem is, as what they're doing is quite harmless. It's all just marketing lol. If you don't like the music, don't listen to it. Pop music isn't going to change. I'm sure there's music fitting of your taste out there somewhere. :D

People get old. Even Pink Floyd was a product of their time.
To answer your question OP: music has almost always been a business. Ever since it became popular to become a musician, it's been easy enough to make them into products. I'm not surprised by it at all.

^^ This. Bands like the Beatles, GnR, etc. Were all at one time meant to sell records. Music's been an industry for a while. Only difference between now and then is the packaging the product comes in.

Right, theres always been awful music... its just that no on remembers it after 5 or 6 years, while the good stuff is remembered for a long time. One D and crap bands like that will be forgotten soon.

I agree completely!
I like songs with meaningful lyrics, bands like R.E.M. The Beatles, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and bands like that. You don't see that kind of musiic anymore. I also can't stand how pop uses that stupid ass auto-tuner shit, in Rock/Metal music, they actually put effort and meaning into their music, not that computerized bullshit. I also agree with you on The X Factor, that shit sucks.
The thing I can't stand the most right now is that PSY band with their sing "Gangnam" Style", and how it's gotten so popular, even though it's just a bunch of Korean auto-tuner electro computerized bullshit, I hate pop music, and the mainstream shit definitely sucks a lot of ass.
I've always been just a Rock/Metal music fan, so that's probably why I feel the way I do, but I still don't see how mainstream pop can get so popular, the lyrics are meaningless and the artists are terrible, it's absolutely horrendous.
At least most of the mainstream Rock music is still pretty good, so i'll just continue listening to that. Fuck pop.

As big of a Pink Floyd fan as I am even they are out dated. Their day has passed there are still fans like me out there they are no where as big as the fan bases newer bands have.

I agree. Love Pink Floyd and Bonjovi. But you have to notice one thing. both of you are ranting at american music. search for european or asian music and you will find a ton of better music. Most of europe's music base is rock, metal, or techno/house/electro. so it is harder to "sing" to make money.
I agree completely!

Metal rules dude. Love it. Will search some of the bands you named. but I do like Gangnam style. except it is not a band nor auto-tuner electro computerized bullshit as you said it was. it is KPop(way better than american pop) and rap. trust me, kpop is way better than american pop. The reason why Psy's gangnam style is so overplayed, is due to the same reason LMFAO's songs are overplayed. soon it will stop.

What do you mean, what happened to Bon Jovi? Nothing happened at all. They're still alive and kicking, in the past 4 years they've gotten the highest grossing tour award twice, they sell out every show, and they're about to release their 12th studio album. I've seen them around the world 5 times and they're just as big as ever. In fact, on Tuesday I'm going to LA to see their guitarist Richie Sambora do a solo show, and I'm meeting him too. So nothing really happened to them at all, it's just that no one pays attention to rock anymore.

I want to sing for a living. Will I make it? No, most likely not. But the people who do have to work for it, and I respect that. Even if they sold out, they made it and that isn't easy.

Music has been a business for ages. Even the Beatles were, at one point, just a boy band singing songs about girls over the same four-chord progression (until they started branching out, of course.) It doesn't have to affect you unless you let it. The only place where I come into contact with pop music is the gym and even there I have my iPod to drown it out. It probably isn't the most social way to go about life, but it keeps the shit out.

I think that just applies to young people. I think there are still more Bon Jovi fans in the world than One Direction fans.

Yeah, well its hard to avoid pop music when it seems to accompany everything in the media and its everywhere you go XD I mean, take a look at youtube!!! You go to watch one of your favourite bands on there who couldn't be further from pop and then you get an advertisement with Nicki Minaj popping up 'singing and rapping'. It's just annoying how we have to have it shoved in our faces! Or should I say shoved into our ears. You can't walk round a shopping centre without a pop station being played, or the shops for that matter!!! It seems styles they sell and the music they play go hand in hand. Think I'm going to start taking some ear plugs for when I have to go shopping.
I get what some of you are saying though, yeah it's been an industry since it practically started but there was more of an 'on the side' thing/benefit of making music. Good music was being made and played live and making money was more of a salary because being a musician were people's livelyhoods/jobs. They just earned while doing what they love. Pop seems to have pushed the idea of making money off of it to the top so it's money first, then 'music'.
It just bugs me that looks, fashion, marketing appeal and personality come before talent. "Oh, it's okay. You don't have to be able to sing. We'll just auto-tune you and then you can mime for live performances while dancing".
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRARGH!!!!!!!!!

Highly unlikely for Pink Floyd considering Auto Tune was invented in 1990 and Cher was the first artist to use it musically.

Yes, Bon Jovi use auto tune. The difference is, Bon Jovi uses auto-tune as a pitch correction, whereas a lot of artists now use it to sound like robots. Anyone can use it to sound like robots, but you still have to be able to sing well in the way that Bon Jovi use it.
