View Full Version : Considering joining Marines

Hi guys,
In the past few months I've been really considering going into military, and I've been constantly getting recruitment calls from all branches to make it worse and better. I'm 18, graduated high school and don't have a job at the moment, I work online for a business and host a few game servers. Obviously my family wants me to go into the Air Force regardless if I do it or not.
My dad was in the U.S. Marines along with 90% of my dads side of the family, both of my uncles were very high ranks in the Marines. I don't mind going into it, obviously I'd prefer Air Force over the better treatment, food, etc. but I generally want to go through the Marines to get that "feel" of being through it, doing the hard work, and being disciplined more than what I currently am. Most of my family probably doesn't think I'll do since I sit at home most of the day and do my casual online work, I do plan to move back to my home state in the upcoming months to get a datacenter job hopefully.
On Monday I'm meeting a Marines recruiter at my house (I declined all of the other recruiters, including navy and army), yes, I'm kind of nervous, even though we'll probably just chat for an hour and that be it, but it seems like it's "all too early" for this stuff. I understand I wouldn't get put in immediately, hell, 2 out of 3 don't even pass boot camp. I could join the reserves (marines) and only go 2 days out of the week or month, I would get paid, and after time the Marines would pay my college costs, 20% first year, 40% second year, and 60% third year -- that would be great, I want to go to college but I'm waiting until I move out of my current state for the better colleges.
Anyways after my two paragraphs of non-needed 'chat', my question continues below. This is only for the United States military, nothing more, if you don't know what it's like or live here sorry!
Q: Which branch would YOU join, regardless of the money?
I want to join the Air Force since I'd get to do more things that I like, but I want to join the Marines for the physical aspect.
Just a short note also, my whole life so far has been based around my online work, what I do on the internet is basically my 'income' and I love it -- if I don't join the military right off I'll most likely move back to DWF, Texas and get a job at a datacenter and deal with server stuff. The main reason I'm posting this is to get peoples comments on which branch they would join and why.

I live in the US but i cannot join any military branch, but don't ignore this comment.
I have friends who's parents/siblings/relatives have gone through the different branches. From what they have told me, joining the Marines is a large commitments, mainly due to boot camp, advance Boot camp(if that is the correct term), and all of the hell weeks. If you are in good shape and have a strong mind, you could probably make it through into the Marines.
IF i could join a US military branch, i would join the navy most likely and try and become a SEAL. But since i can't, oh well. but i will have to join a finnish military branch when i turn 18(yay for conscription). Most likely will choose the special forces or fighting divers, a.k.a finnish version of the Navy SEALs
hopefully this helped

It doesn't seem like you're "considering" joining the marines. It seems like you've decided to join the marines and wanted to tell us about it. Regardless, I'd like you to reconsider. From a moral and ethical standpoint joining the military is one of the worst things you can do.

The Marine Corps is one of the finest fighting forces in the world. The Marine Corps and the Navy are probably the best choices of enlisting in because of short deployment times. I will be enlisting with the Marine Corps.

Well, i highly disagree with this. He's brave enough to go out and put himself in the middle of people trying to kill him. He's defending something he believes in, how is that possibly "the worst thing you can do"?
I considered joining the marines at some point, however it didn't fuel my interest for very long. I have friends who are being deployed in december.
If you do decide to sign up, best of luck to you and much respect.

Well, it's not really a set decision.. I didn't want to go and tell it somewhere, I could care less, hell, I don't really want to do it but I just think I should. I'd rather sit at my house and do what I do every day : P
And it's definitely not one of the worst things to do, what kind of moral do you have lol? You American or not

I'm joining the Air Force. I've done a ton of research on all the different branches. For you i reccomend considering each branch.
So its true that the air force has the best bases. Would you rather live in a tent for 4 years or a base thats like a small city? Personally I would prefer better living quarters.
I think each branch has its own unique experience. They are all good but one could definetley be better for you. You say you might prefer the marines over the air force for the physical aspect. Your going to experience a physical taxing boot camp no matter which brach. after that the physical aspect is dependant on your job. My recruiter told me that the air forces pararescue men are one of the toughest groups in the military over all. he said tougher than army rangers, and said maybe seals too.
Gosh i could tell u allot more let me know what u think of what i said and feel free to ask any more questions i love talking about this.

lol, yeah, I agree about the tent thing -_- That's obviously some of the things I would dislike. I didn't think this thread would get this many replies :P

Well personally I would join the Airforce. I've went out to fly a plane before and it was a blast. I commend you for wanting to make such a sacrifice for this country. But make sure both of your parents are alright with it, but dont join the military because you feel pressured to. Only do it if you want to. This really is a huge decision and shouldn't be taken lightly. Take as much time as you need to think it over.

My dad was in it ^^ he's also AWESOME!
The military is ALWAYS in need of good men, and just one is a big difference, whether you think so or not. Our world is getting more and more in need of heros.

Yeah, but there's no real "guarantee" that you'll get that job of flying. That's one of the things I dislike. I'll probably get my uncle to go with me that day to the recruiter if I do it eventually, I can't tell what rank he was but he was pretty high up in the military.

going a bit off-topic, but just because someone is in the military, it does mean they are heroes, and, no the world does not need heroes. I have done a 2 month research comparing old, mythological, and modern heroes and finding which are the true heroes, and they are heroes from myth.

but to the point on joining the military, if you uncle is a high ranking, why not ask him first his opinions on which branch to choose and what to do. Also try not using his rank to help you. i would go by my self and have him wait in the car or what ever.

I rarely talk to my uncles, never have, but there's one that is willing to help me get the position I want, and if you can get the "job" you want, in any situation military or not, it's definitely worth it.

Air force, my whole family loves flight and my dad once said. When I was young that I better join the air force after going to the Air and Space museum haha, if I can't fly I'd love to join skunk works to help the air force,
Btw good luck bud and be sure to post about how your application went, thanks for deciding to be a hero especially since today is veterans day

still talk with him first about it and have him wait outside or inside, but i recommend you do all the important talking. only have him there for suppressing fire, if you get what i mean.

ROTW  Education and Careers.
This seems to be less of a debate and more of a general discussion about the topic.

Exact reason why I'm planning to join :P And as an update, I did talk to the recruiter for over 5 hours that day, we talked about it and he told me some of his stories which he wasn't suppose to talk about :P It was cool, but I called him yesterday and said I didn't want to do it unfortunately, at the time. I am waiting to move back to my home state to join, it's generally not a good time for me to do it right now, plus I'm trying to wait until I get a girlfriend, and a job.

I guess you have to kinda look out all the ways you want to live and get on.
part of that is looking at all the ways you can go - so talk to the other recruiters as well - maybe you need to just get out and see whats there.

I plan on joining the navy. I hope to be an officer so my first choice is the Naval Academy although I would settle for going NROTC.

Id say marines you'll have more pride in yourself, plus the marines aren't going to be doing anymore tours in Afghanistan, just the army for police actions or some crap
