View Full Version : Does humanity have a higher purpose in life?

Sir Suomi

Does humanity have a higher purpose in life than just being a dominant species on earth? I believe yes. I believe that God has blessed us with our attributes that make us "human." I believe that we are meant to do something important, and I'm hoping we don't screw it up.

Well, that's my take on that. Feel free to argue or disagree.

In my opinion, no. We simply exist, then die. We are here simply by chance. Ultimately, there is no higher power that cares about us.

Can't we just live because we can? "Be something great/do something great/ our purpose is something great", is such a heavy burden. Like if we feel we aren't great enough we're wasting time and resources.

I don't know or care if we're here for a great purpose. If so, why are we focusing on just us? Why not the goldfish or a tree? They're life, they've probably got a great purpose too. I'm atheist and partly miffed whenever someone tells me god has a plan for me. That's fine, god can shares his blueprints, but I'll be over here making my own.

I too believe it's simply just chance that we are here. Although I don't believe in God, I believe in some sort of force or just something which we can't comprehend that welds this world and it's inhabitants together. Somethimes there are just moments or events where it just seems too much of a coincidence. For example, thinking of a friend all day you used to know very well and then turning the corner and bumping into them. A religious person in this instance may believe God granted them this 'coincidence' to make them happy or reward them for something else but I just believe there is something that sort of... intertwines us all.

As for purpose... At a glance, it would seem our purpose is to just be. Born, reproduce, die, Purpose fulfilled. What we do in our lives and the way society has developed is just something that humans came up with and when i refer to the development of society, i mean the one where we all have to grow up learning and then go and get a job. What possible higher purpose could we have? Maybe we were meant to be caretakers of this world? Ensure it's survival? Take care of the environment from the beginning?

Or maybe our purpose was to naturally create conflict, ensure that nothing ever thrived for too long or became too much.

I just want to say, this is very difficult to answer... I've spent at least 20 minutes writing out paragraphs, deleting them, thinking of my own ideas on this question.

I just think, we are here to be and to eventually, die out. Maybe the cycle will repeat again after 'god' knows how many years and another lot of organisms will grow and develop and then they'll die out and so on and so forth.

A purpose is whatever is intended for something.

Do we have a higher purpose? Well i think that depends if there is anything higher than us. If there isnt then how could we possibly have a higher purpose? If there is it depends on that entitys will.

No, I don't believe there's some higher purpose or reason we're here on Earth. We just exist.

I have the same opinion that Isaac does. I believe that we are here by chance and that it truly is that simple. I don't believe that there is a higher being waiting for us in heaven or hell -- nor do I believe that there is a heaven or hell. This can be taken as an extremely morbid outlook on life; but "it is what it is."

Well, we are the most advanced organisms in the universe from our knowledge, so we definitely are special in this existence just because of that. However, even if a defined God did exist (which personally I do not know for sure) I really think that he/she would not give two-shits about us since they are "all-powerful." Also, we are ultimately animals too. And we might not exist to see the end of everything.

I think, however, that humanity's going to have a ultimatum soon to prove if it does or not with globalization and ideological beliefs reaching there maximum level. We will once we realize that no matter who we are, we are all one species. And to fight the challenges of our existence and to survive against them we must put aside our differences and unite together or perish alone into history. And personally. I still see quite a bit of segregation. Humanity right now is surviving, but it is on life support. And it has been like that since the birth of civilization.

I know that sounded poetic and melodramatic as fuck, but that's personally how I feel. Long story gone short. We have the ability to have a higher purpose when we realize what we truly are and why we are so divided. And even if we do die out, Honestly, I wouldn't give a damn. Let chimps or dolphins take a stab at being the dominate species for once XD

The title makes it sound like humanity is alive.
It's almost a 'Meaning of life' question. One of the many boring philosophical questions that can't be answered.

I believe that humans are here not just for the sake of existence. If we were only supposed to reproduce and die, then why do we have to study, grow, and face challenges? Why aren't we just unicellular organisms?

Good point, why put up with that bullshit. We should all just commit mass suicide.

i believe that our purpose in life is to have fun and live our lives to the full. Once we die, we are dead. there is nothing after that. For that reason i intend to live my life to the full. I also believe that as we only have one life, nobody is entitled to prevent another person from living their own life to the full.

We aren't unicellular since having many cells provides a significant evolutionary advantage. The reason that we study, grow and face challenges is similar. People who don't do these things don't succeed in life, because of societal constructs.

I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You're a plague and we are the cure.

Oh sorry, experienced a bit of a glitch there. Higher purpose you say ...

If there is a God, perhaps we are just here so he has someone who can go 'ooh look at the pretty nebula', 'ooh check out the cute bunny' , 'wow, isn't it clever how this is all made out of stardust?"

Human
November 16th, 2012, 12:53 PM
No we don't, I strongly believe we don't. I think we're nothing but clumps of cells and tissue... just by chance we gave up brawn for brains and developed tools and became more intelligent.
Humans are successful animals however... if any creature was given the chance to multiply like us, like a virus and take over everywhere it would take the opportunity. I think consciousness is just a by product of the brains workings really.

People everywhere are asking the questions; "What is the purpose of life?" and "Why are we here?"
It's a fundamental and important question, yet most people don't have answers as shown in posts above,so the question arises: Is life just a game ? (Answer here (http://www.islifejustagame.com/))

You might be amazed to know that Islam is the only religion that is providing clear and concise answers for these questions.

I believe the Creator's purpose for us is to enjoy life as best we can and to improve it for future generations.....pretty simple - the purpose of life is to have life. In my opinion science is a divinely purposed pursuit, to learn the organization behind our apparent reality, learning is living.

That purpose looks devoid of purpose. Oh! You have to bow to down to me! oh! I created you! Oh!

That's not purpose, that's filling the voids. If you want to debate on this, come to my diary.

Is there a "higher purpose" to our life? No. If there was would we not know what this purpose was? Would we not know what we had to do in this life to fulfil this purpose?

in short... no! are humans on the whole that arrogant that we like to think we are "blessed" by a mythical being and given divine purpose to rule over earth? we are nothing, just another species albeit further advanced than many. The universe is huge, we as a race rule a single planet, a microscopic piece of the universe and even then we cant get along. Its about the equivalent of ruling your own bedroom in relation to the whole city. Even that is too generous as we cant get along and live life together, instead we hate and fight.

All summed up by; “We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star." Stephen Hawking

the way I look at it, most of us are like a virus metaphoricaly speaking.

we live and multiply in a cell then when the cell dies we flee our home cell and infect the rest.

the cell would be earth.
