So yea puerto rico mite possibly become a state, do you think it should be binding or non-bing agreement? I think it should be 100% binding, your either with us or a territory

I guess binding? I'm hoping they become a state, I mean they already receive a lot of benefits from us anyway, the only thing they get away with is taxes and all that.

I'm all for Puerto Rico becoming a U.S. State, however it will be slightly awkward getting used to the new American Flag.

I suppose I'm for it? I'm a bit neutral although my OCD prefers 50 states.

I wouldn't see why they would, since they voted for it, so we should expect it to pass, since Obama did say he would support the desession.

Well yes, it should be a binding agreement. I'm all for them being part of the country, considering they've received the same benefits we have for a long time.

This is pretty much my opinion on it. I feel as if peurto rico becoming a state won't affect me, however it might help the government rake in a few extra dollars in taxes.
But damn. Fifty-one stars? That'd take some getting used to.

No it wouldn't. It's one extra star, people won't even notice it.

Not just the appearance, the fact that there would be 51 states. I've grown up knowing 50. The educational systems would end up implementing some sort of "puerto rico history", just like there are for the other 50 states.
It would just be a change, therefore it would take time to get used to.

It's hardly anything to complain about, though.

In your perspective, sure. I'm not necessarily complaining, just stating that adding another state would take some getting used to, whether it be from an individual's standpoint or that of the country.

So? Think about when Alaska and Hawaii were added in the 50s. They weren't apart of the mainland of the US, but they were US territories. I don't know how anyone couldn't have foreseen Puerto Rico wanting to become a state in the near future. It was just like Hawaii and Alaska.

I don't know if it's just my fucked up school system or what, but I've never had to learn about EVERY state's history. Sure there's US history and learning about some general things in some states. But that's about it. Really what you need to know about the history of Puerto Rico is that it was once a Spanish territory until 1898 and basically because of the Spanish-American war (and the Treaty of Paris of 1898) Puerto Rico was ceded to the US. And then Puerto Ricans became US citizens in 1917. And there ya go. That's all you need to know really... But you should have already learned about that in US history. If you haven't take it yet, then there you go.

It won't necessarily pass, congress needs to approve and they might even re-vote, but now they want to stay but suppose like 12 years from now sh*t hit the the fan for the economy and they just simpily decide to vote out, that won't be right,
Also think about the early 20 century all the kids were taught about the 48 "continueous" states plus territory hawaii, alaska, PR, piilipeans, cuba etc, imagine how some people thought about our country extending past the continueous states and to othe various areas

But they basically a state anyway, the only thing they get away with is now paying Federal Taxes? From what I read, after we annexed Hawaii, their economy boosted by XX% and I don't get what you mean about the learning part?

Im all for it! If the people of Puerto Rico want to, then we should embrace them with open arms.
However, I am going to miss that symbolic 50-starred flag a lot :(
