Voters in Puerto Rico have supported a non-binding referendum to become a full US state.

The measure will require approval from the US Congress, but President Barack Obama has said he will respect the vote.

The island is currently a US territory, which uses the dollar and whose citizens travel on US passports.

But it does not return senators to the US Congress and is represented in Washington by a non-voting delegate.

Almost 80% of the island's electorate took part in the referendum, the fourth in the past 45 years.

With almost all the votes counted, almost 54% voted to change the island's relationship with the US.

And in reply to a second question on what future they favoured, nearly two-thirds wanted full statehood.

If Congress grants its approval, Puerto Ricans would have the right to vote in all US elections, but would also have to pay federal taxes, something at present they are excused from.

In 1898 the Spanish lost the Caribbean Island at the end of the Spanish-American war and it came under US control
In 1917 its people became US citizens - they are allowed to serve in the military but still do not have the right to vote in US presidential elections
The country is a self-governing territory of the US but the US Congress and the president have ultimate control, providing social services, foreign policy and defence
They have a congressional representative who does not have voting rights
Becoming a state would see the Puerto Ricans having to pay federal taxes - currently they are exempt - but they would have the same rights as those on the mainland
Puerto Rico profile

The island came under US control in 1898 when Spain lost the island at the end of the Spanish-American war.

Ties were strengthened in 1917 when Puerto Ricans became US citizens and were allowed to serve in the military.

'No other option'

There are now almost a million more Puerto Ricans in the US than on the island.

Supreme Court judge Sonia Sotomayor, singer Jennifer Lopez and the former jazz musician Tito Puente are all of Puerto Rican descent, though all three were born in New York.

Ties between the island and the mainland are strong and many on the island considered it inevitable that a full union be requested.

A young voter in the capital San Juan, Jerome Lefebre, said: "Puerto Rico has to be a state. There is no other option.

"We're doing okay, but we could do better. We would receive more benefits, a lot more financial help."

But that opinion was rejected by Ramon Lopez de Azua: "Puerto Rico's problem is not its political status.

"I think that the United States is the best country in the world, but I am Puerto Rican first."

The island has been hit hard by the current recession - it has debts of $68bn (£42bn) and unemployment is more than 13%.

President Barack Obama, who visited the island last year, has said he will respect the will of Puerto Ricans if there is a clear majority.

Any change would require approval by the US Congress, but no territory has ever been denied a petition for admission to the States.

It seems that a lot of history is being made with the 2012 elections--first openly gay senator, a 51st state (provided Congress gives the ok), two states legalizing gay marriage and two states legalizing marijuana, etc. So, we just lived through history people. Feels kinda weird, doesn't it?

If they are ready to the cope wih the taxes, go ahead!

I live on a US Island and we are part of a state (NY), but a few years ago a Senator brought up the possibility of us becoming a US State and separating from the state we are already part of. A problem though is The taxes are among the top 10 highest taxed counties in the country already though. But i would be for my island becoming a state, only for the fact that the way our state is going, we'd be better off seperating...

More history coming our way. I say we put Puerto Rico on the map as a state and have 51 states. Besides I'm tired of seeing 50 stars on the flag.

I've read about, or they want to split NYC from New York, because the City is totally different from the rest of New York.

Please, if any US state should separate, it should be Michigan. The UP is actually a really good place full of history but stupid Detroit in the Lower Penninsula is bringing us down. The problem though is that we would struggle keeping up with the economy - especially with the overall US economy right now.

Anyways, I would be really happy if we got another state. It would be a huge change that would be in history books and I would've experienced it in my lifetime. That would be awesome.
And of course they become citizens and all that. Whatever. I'm more excited about the historical-ness of it.

No, NYC doesn't want to split from NY. I don't live in NYC, I live on the Long Island suburbs (Nassau and Suffolk Counties). The problem is, the rest of NY is blocked for us by NYC. It is so much cheaper upstate, it is like a whole different place. There is nearly no business upstate. They won't be splitting NYC and LI from the rest of NY anytime soon, because the rest of NY needs us. also, we don't want higher taxes than we are already paying.

Oh lol sorry! I doubt NY would let them though. I doubt they'd let any of us down here seperate because the truth is, upstate needs our wealthy economy down here. They always forget about us though! But if it came donw to money, there'd be a fight!

Well, yeah, it'll be amazing. The first state to be added in our lifetime. But, then the flag is going to look stupid. :/ Will there be a row of one star at the bottom? This is a problem.

Well they are currently our territory/commonwealth, they approved it in there country, so now it will be voted on in Congress, which they have yet to decline a request for statehood and President Obama did say he would support there discission, so it may be difficult for some nations, but Puerto Rico, is a different case.

If Puerto Rico becomes I state it will get 2 senators making the senate have 102 members, and in needs some Representatives. And since it is very unlikely that we will add more reps, we have to vote some reps out of power, and those seats will got to only Puerto Rico. Re-directing will occur. It's nothing we can't handle, but the House belongs to Republicans and the Senate to Democrats.

Your right, according to this link, Puerto Rico could gain three and Florida, Washington, Texas, California, and Minnesota would lose one. http://www.thesocialcontract.com/artman2/publish/tsc_22_2/tsc_22_2_poston_farris.shtml

This isn't the only new state in the works. Some people in Southern Oregon and Northern California are trying to make these parts a separate state. Puerto Rico is more likely to happen though.
