MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - Wisconsin Democratic Representative Tammy Baldwin made history on Tuesday by becoming the first openly gay U.S. Senator, defeating former governor Tommy Thompson in the most expensive Senate race in state history, Fox News projected.
Between them, the two candidates raised at least $65 million.
Fox News is the only major news organization to so far project Baldwin the winner. If confirmed, her victory would be another blow to Republicans, who needed to make a net gain of four seats to take a majority in the U.S. Senate.
Baldwin assumes the seat of retiring Democrat Herb Kohl, who is finishing his fourth term in the Senate. The 50-year-old Baldwin, first elected to Congress in 1998, also becomes the first woman senator from Wisconsin with her victory Tuesday.

The presidential election will be old news in due time; but this is a feat that will never be forgotten. Kudos to Tammy Baldwin and the people of Wisconsin for helping this nation take one of the biggest steps forward it has ever taken.

For the first time in the history of the United States, the "elite" upper chamber of Congress will have an openly gay member elected in their own right. That in and of itself shows how far we've come in bringing equality to the LGBT community. But it's also a thing of hope. For me, being gay myself and having aspirations in politics, it gives me the hope that I can achieve those aspirations. That my sexuality won't hinder me in being everything I hope to be. Once again, our generation has lived through history. This step, I know, has a lot of significance--there's still a ways to go, but it shows that we're progressing. For that reason, tonight should be a night we never forget. Not because it was the reelection of Barack Obama--we already saw him elected once as the first African-American president. But rather, because tonight another step, another advance was made for equality. Congratulations to Senator-elect Baldwin, and best of luck to her as she goes to serve her constituents. And a hats off to everyone who helped make her election possible in Wisconsin.

LGBT are becoming more and more equal every day... Well, not quite, you know what I mean. It's fantastic. She got there by being a hardworking dedicated women. Her sexuality is irrelevant in getting to where she is. It's an example of equality. She is just as capable as any other heterosexual person. She just happens to be gay, and proud.

I also just want to mention the PHENOMENAL day the world has had regarding marriage equality.

COME ON, AUSTRALIA. YOU'RE FALLING BEHIND.

A bunch of milestones tonight for the LGBT community. Two states have legalized gay marriage by ballot for the first time in the history of the United States. In all other times, it's been decided by the legislators or the courts.

While I did get very excited when this was announced, I do have to second a comment I saw somewhere else.

Was she right for the job?

Of course, I know little about Wisconsin so I wouldn't be able to tell, I'm just concerned with the sort of liberal revolution that will take place sometime in the future, that we won't try to be liberal just because we want to show everyone how liberal we are. Same with a black president and a woman president. According to exit polls, 93% of blacks voted for Obama this election, 95% last election. And you know it, when a woman becomes president, she'll get the majority of women voters by-far.

Because if we vote like that, we're still not equal. I don't want to be at a disadvantage compared to typical citizens, but I don't want to be at an advantage either.
