Cold sore=herpes. There are some OTC meds for that. And even better things by prescription.

If it's a cancre sore, try something like Ambesol, which will numb it.

Fortunately, stuff in the mouth heals pretty fast, so whatever it is, it should be temporary.

Um, from what I've been told by a doctor, getting cold sores or ulcers usually means you're run down and you're supposed to take Vitamin B supplements or something. :S
If you don't wanna go to the chemist and get something for it, try rinsing your mouth out with warm salt water. Tastes yuck, but it does help.

Herpes, lack of vitamins... wtf?

Just an infection, baking soda on a couple of days will solve it.
