(I asked a corresponding question to the girl's puberty forum.)

Boys (or girls if you have something to say):
Have you ever experienced a dad (or it could be an older brother) who brought his little girl (or baby sister) into the guys' locker room at a fitness center or public pool/water park?
Did it make you uncomfortable? :whoops::eek:
I ask because some friends said they were surprised that my dad & older brother brought me into the guys' locker rooms with them when I was young.
Did you go with an older female relative in their locker room when you were young?
Do you think the rules are different for the diff genders respectively (age limits, etc.) ?
I am interested in your general thoughts.

I spent a year in Japan, where we have 'sentos' (public baths). You're allowed to bring in children of the wrong sex up to the age of 12, and it's very common to see dads or brothers with girls up to that age in tow. None of the Japanese mind at all, it's perfectly normal for them. I was a bit uncomfortable at first - there are hardly any black teenagers here, and I wasn't used to having little girls gawping at my prick and bum - but now I don't care.

I was raised nudist so not an issue for me personally, but I know some people do get annoyed at it, but its not a rational reaction just a 'programmed taboo' as the previous post about Japan's attitudes points out. I've had similar experiences in technically "non-nudist" contexts in europe where mixed age and gender nudity is acceptable (eg steam rooms and saunas, plunge pools etc).

The only thing I'd be concerned with is exposing a young person to sexual predators, and that can happen in same sex changing anyway. If they are accompanied, you've taken steps to address that issue already.

From the kids perspective, a young person with experience of what the human body really looks like as opposed to false impressions from magazines, tv and film or pornography is far more likely to be well adjusted than not. This point has been made several times in the UK in relation to correcting misconceptions arising from porn in particular, while some conservative commentators (http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nhsr/nhsr036.pdf) like to imply the only reaction is banning porn, others believe it is more realistic to educate about the reality (http://sexperienceuk.channel4.com/tv-shows/sex-education) by seeing 'real' nude bodies.

Excuse me? I can't imagine going with my dad in the man's locker room at 12. Are you sure you are not making that up? He stopped that with me at about just before I was 9. And when guys noticed I was there they would turn around..

If you were babysitting (a little sister, cousin) up to what age would you be take her?

i have expirienced it as i am from Finland and most northern european countries don't really give a shit. not uncomfterable, was natural. I have gone with older female relatives. in finland i think it is an unwritten rule that it kinda ends around 10ish. last time i went into a female locker room was when i was 12. was a horny day. if you know what i mean

I think its unfair to imply that particular poster was making something up, especially when there are other supportive comments.

As the USA is such a huge country I think US citizens have a lot of 'peer reinforcement' on domestically held views, which perhaps aren't challenged very often since you don't have the huge variety of countries on your doorstep in the same way we do in Europe.

This really isn't intended to be a dig at you personally : the rest of the world does find that the USA tends to forget that its own version of 'normal' is not the only 'normal' out there, which can get irritating :P

Well I was certainly not trying to be unfair. I was just surprised. To avoid making a story too long, it happened to come up, locker rooms and things, and when I admitted to a couple of my friends that I went with my dad and older bro (only a couple time with my dad, more regularly with my bro) through the man's locker room (and that was a long time ago, 6 or 7 yrs), they were quite taken aback, so I wanted to know what other people thought about it. I don't know about what europeans do in these matters, I was not thinking about that.
I posted the same question in the girls' section and they locked it saying it had nothing to do with puberty.

my dad used to bring my sister in with us to the guys locker room when she was younger. i was kinda young too so don't really remember thinking much of it. not long ago my cousins stayed over and my dad brought them in with us to change. they were 10 and 8 and both changed with me and my dad. they did look at me a lot but that was about it...

No
Do you think the rules are different for the diff genders respectively (age limits, etc.) ?no, but the age should be lower

I'm a member of a health club that has locker rooms for men, women and family. So it bugs me when a dad has a girl with him in the men's locker room. That's exactly what the family locker room is for!

It's become an issue there actually. Moms and dads were complaining about all the nudity in the men's locker room, saying that we don't even try to cover up. The moms complaint abt the men's locker room is that their 8 y/o son doesn't want to change in the family one anymore because he's a big boy, but then complains that there are too many naked guys walking from the showers too the dry off area or they are naked at their locker. Just stupid.

The dads complain that guys should make an attempt to cover themselves at all times when a girl is in there. They think we should dry off in the showers, which is dumb, then wear a towel back to the locker, leave the towel on and put on our underwear under the towel and then remove the towel. That's just dumb and slow.

Guys didn't and don't do that, so the dads complained and said there was inappropriate behavior going on, so the club hired locker room attendants to make sure the little kids weren't being taunted. After a few months of the attendant saying nothing bad was going on, the parents shut up about, a sign over the entrance says there is nudity in the locker room pls use family locker room if its a problem.

One day a dad has his daughter with him, she looks like she's abt 6 y/o. I get back from showering and she's standing less than 2 feet away from me even though there is all kinds of room. She's about eye level with my junk, completely staring at it the whole time I'm naked which is like 30 seconds. The dad notices towards the end and tells me that I could have changed faster. So I say, she didnt need to be rude and stare or he could have been paying attention and had her look away or better yet,use the family locker room and if he'd like to, lets go up to the front desk together and let them decide. We go and the staff repeats the options I gave him.

He still comes in with her, I change like always but some of my lacrosse buddies now make it a point to be naked as long as possible when he's there with her. That's not right either, but its kinda funny.

If kids didn't stare at us and other guys, there wouldn't be a problem. Glance, yes, look... Maybe. Stare? no.

Like I said, it's an issue there.

10 is kind of old. Was it a problem for other people? I think the ladies would complain if a mom brought a boy that old in their locker room.

This is in no way related to puberty. :locked:
