I dont think you should start serious work-out until you finish puberty. If you start serious stuff now, you can hurt yourself, and stunt growth. It is best to wait until you are at least a senior in high school before you even consider hard workouts. 14 is NOT the best time to start:D

For reals. I mean, I'd like to get strong, but I don't want shoulders to my neck and a 16-pack on my gut 0_0
And Ciberkiller, at 14, you won't gain that much noticeable muscle mass anyways...

Wow people he said he just wants to start off and build a little muscle not become a body builder.
The problem with an actual gym membership though is that a lot of gyms (for safety and liability reasons) won't allow members younger than (on average) 16 years old. So that may be a road block already so before doing anything you'd have to call gyms around your area to see what the minimum age is but don't be suprised to come across gyms that will say you need to wait at least 2 more years.
It is perfectly alright to start lifting weights at 14. Saying to wait until you're a senior in high school is too extreme. You can start much, much earlier. The key is though that you would need to start off small and don't get macho and try lifting huge amounts of weights prematurely.
Gaining muscle is something that takes a long time and you won't get immediate results. Sometimes you'll feel like you're doing it for nothing but it requires patience and it is very important that you don't rush ahead of yourself because you can cause quite a big of damage to your arms or legs.
The earlier you start the better foundation you have when you get older so you'll be somewhat ahead of all the preliminary weight lifting and once you're 16, 17, or 18 you don't have to start off at the small amounts because you'd have done it already.
What's best is to try to talk to your parents like maybe your dad, older brother, cousin, uncle, w/e that can help you out and get you started. So if you can't go to some places like Gold's Gym, 24 hour fitness, etc then maybe try the YMCA which accommodates younger ages I think and might have better luck there.
So yeah you are at an ok age to start but it's important that you start off small and don't get ahead of yourself and preferably work with an adult or family member to help train you. Not only can that provide insight but can provide motivation as well.

Also to add, you should definately start working out in puberty.. Not extreme but just to keep fit.. If you wouldn't work out at all besides some useless P.E class.. Your body would be too weak and wouldn't have enough muscle mass to be in healthy growing condition..

Well, i go to the gym (to lose weight btw.....)
I think (over in Ireland) that you have to be 16 to use weights, but the Treadmill, Rower, Crosstrainer (my personal favourite :D:rolleyes:) etc. earlier, althought I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND USING WEIGHTS just yet mate.
Wheras you can if you want, but get professional advise (i.e. the trainer, gym workers etc.) If you dont, DON'T START TOO BIG!!!!!!
Well thats all. Hope it helps...:)

First, happy (almost) birthday! And good for you for wanting to take care of yourself and begin working out. I think this is a good idea.
Second, there's absolutley no truth whatsoever that working out will stunt your growth or otherwise be detrimental. to your body (or to puberty). Actually, the opposite is true. Your body will be healthier, and it will perform to it's best. The really important thing to remember is to not overdo it, start slowly, build gradually. A little time consistently and regularly will do the job nicely, this will take time. Don't try in a rush to get it all done in one or two visits, you'll be disappointed and in much pain! Consider asking one of the trainers at the gym for some suggestions, too.

Hey man, I think that's good for you and you should go ahead and start weight training. It's a fun thing to do and great to learn at 14, like everyone says, so you can secure and maintain a healthy lifesytle.
I want to add that I don't believe weight training would stunt your growth. I have read extensively from links provided by Google and I have always heard, and never, EVER heard otherwise: "there is no conclusive scientific evidence that weight training during puberty stunts growth".
Weight training to maintain a healthy lifestyle, get stronger and get the ladies (or guys, whatever) is very good to start at 14 or a few years from then.
However, I don't suggest that you do any body building and intense workouts when 1) you're just starting out and 2) you're in puberty or under 18. I'm not at all behind this because I think this may, if anything, stunt growth. It can also be dangerous and you could really over-do it (and overworking-out is fucking hell). But for what you say you're doing, and all the guys at my school are doing, that's just fine =]
I agree with Anthony, Hyper, and IAMSAM.

i started working out at you age. however, i was doing it for football and hockey. My coach helped me develop a plan which was safe for me and that would be truely effective.
the first step is to really ask what your goal is for working out. remember, push ups and sit ups do tos for you. however if your ging to start... take it slow, ask questions if you dont know how to do something, and get help getting started from someone who knows exactly what they're doing. everyone is different, and eeryone needs a workout as differnt and unique as them to achieve results that will make you really happy.

Actually if you want to just tone and make your body stronger you can do push ups and sit ups. Push ups will work your abs, chest, triceps, shouders, biceps it is a total body work out if you do them right and adjust your distance between your hands.

Just go the gym and ask a trainer to develop a plan for you. Unless your overly developed heavy weights are not recommended until 16years of age.
You will basically get a workout comprising of body weight stuff as well as endurance training, IE: 15-20 reps of a low weight
This will build up your strength but won't make much bulk. You have to even be careful doing stuff like that.
As I said just go to the gym and ask a trainer to make a program for you, and he/she will go through everything with you.
