Now I know we have a thread around here somewhere about the greatest guitar solos of all time. This basically the same thing except with guitar riffs. I'll get back to you guys with mine in the morning when I'm awake enough to think strait. In the mean time tell me what you think.

Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze. Yeah, it's stereotypical, but it is the most euphoria-inducing riff ever.
Also Pink Floyd - Young Lust :D

If we're talking the best, you can't beat Meshuggah. As in, anyone trying to imitate this guitar riff will probably break their wrist. This is probably one of the most skilled riffs any band has performed. I'm not a big fan of the vocal word, but the sound is orgasmic. I present to you Bleed by Meshuggah.

Another skilled song with killer riffs is Bland Street Bloom by SikTh, love the numerous riffs on this track. Once again, the riff's freaking kill.

Finally, we have Erase/Begin by Fellsilent, this is one sexy sounding riff.

So basically, if you're trying to find songs with complex and beautiful riffs, you can't go past these. I could go further, and post some more riffs, but these are my favourites.

Well I'm going to have to go old school because I only play electric guitar with my friends' dad, so these may not be to everyone's tastes ...
Lynyrd Skynyrd Freebird - http://youtu.be/np0solnL1XY?t=4m55s (Gradually builds up, lasts a good while which is good because I never want it to stop). We've tried playing this a few times, you do need at least 2 leads for best effect, and you need serious callouses to keep going :P
I also love the solos from Crossroads by Cream - first solo starts here http://youtu.be/Dg1pHeYmaQE?t=1m25s (learnt a LOT of technique when I learned this, but Clapton makes it so effortless)
Jimmy Page

Keep yourself alive by Queen
The song has enough riffs for an entire album, and the intro riff is one of the few Queen riffs I can't do,and one of the best too
Most rememberable riff I know is Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath, simple and awesome

Sweet Child Of Mine~GNR
Really? I mean, I love this riff. It's amazing, but isn't it a little cliche? And kind of overrated imo :P

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is the intro of Raining Blood by Slayer.
I have another in my head but I can't think of the name of the song, which isn't helpful. :whoops:

have you even listened to seasons in the abyss?
What I meant was, it's a shame they don't do more than they already do. Not more than just the one song. Because after about 2:10 in Seasons of the Abyss the riffs give way to the standard method of playing guitar used by thrash and death metal bands: riff-free. So what I'm saying is that slayer is awesome. Slayer's songs where they deviate from the norm of guitar technique for their genre is awesome. And I would definitely like to see more of the latter. Because it's awesome.

I am going to have the best riffs ever played are definitely from ZZ Top. But, some of the Black Keys stuff is up there because every thing they do is so riff based.

The funeral~Band of horses
Every living fiber of my being loves you to death right now for that, Bert. I showed you that!
But yeah. The entire guitar guitar arrangement in "The Funeral" is fantastic. It grabs me by the brain and induces the deepest thought process that the human mind can attain.

I'm gonna be a bit more modern...
Godspeed Hellbound- Black Label Society. It's perfect, and just so cool.
Before I Forget- You have to remember when this came out... It was totally bad ass.
The Gun Show- In This Moment. It's so heavy and it just makes me want to go into a head banging frenzy. :3
