Custom Post Faces

This is sort of a continuation of this thread (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1996703), but more suggestion-y. So the suggestion was that we implement custom user post faces for those at/over 10000 posts since it takes awhile to get there. Opinions?

EDIT 2: Maybe we can lower it since a lot of people think 10,000 is too much. Please also give a number we should lower it to (that is already a rank).

EDIT 3: A lot of people seem to be saying 7500 posts is good. Also, Eric made the lovely suggestion of having a contest be held in the art section to choose our new 7500 post face.

I'm all for the suggestion if we can find a way to do it. Personally, I think a post count lower than 10,000 would be better, somewhere around 7000 would probably be better in this case. In all honesty, I probably wouldn't use it just because I'm special like that :P but I know plenty of people who probably would, and it might generate more activity on the site from members. Whether that's good or bad is up for debate, but if we can find a way to set it up and get a compromise/agreement on the number of posts, then I think it would be just fine and dandy.

and maybe instead of having a custom face, we could all just like.. have a contest for the 7,500 posts face. i'm trying to be open minded :P:P maybe a bit too open minded

Of course, nothing has been approved by senior staff yet, but we have a good start so far!

i think this would be okay, but 10,000 is very unrealistic, if you don't think? i mean 4 maybe 5 people would have them? what about 7,500 is when you get the customized 5,000 face. don't you think it's a bit more.. realistic? plus then you have to find people who know how to make the faces. it just doesn't seem very important. i mean, it's nice to have a bunch of cool features, but the site is about helping people and in the long run, most things on the site that have features (minus the rep system) are supposed to be there for help.

I actually think 10K is fine. This is supposed to be like an encouragement system to make more helpful and educated posts, and once you finally get there than you will be rewarded by being able to change your post face. I think the 10K face is just fine.

I don't have a problem with the post. It's just that have you ever seem a post by someone and just know that they are close to a new face? For example, me. I don't believe that making the 10K post face custom will incur any more spam than us staff already have to deal with. Are you suggesting that a user will spam more if the next face/rank is custom? I actually think 10K is fine. This is supposed to be like an encouragement system to make more helpful and educated posts, and once you finally get there than you will be rewarded by being able to change your post face. I think the 10K face is just fine.

However, some members on here do make lots of posts per day which can actually be of high caliber. I also think that this would be sort of a "treat", per se. I do not really think it will decrease the number of helpful posts and call me thickheaded but I don't really see your reasoning. But I am happy to hear your opinions, so feel free to elaborate more either here or over PM.

Personally I don't like them. Not saying the idea is a bad one it's just that from what I saw on GovTeen they were pretty ugly. So I'm Switzerland.

Might be too hard, as Ant said he never found a plugin for multiple rank faces however just adding a 7500 face would be easy.

Pretty sure it needs to be a plugin for vBulletin and that takes time and I think it will need to be approved before it's released

I really only see this as a gateway to massive spamming and useless posts, post qualty is of far more importance than quantity. Call me biased but if anyone should get custom faces it should be those who have been on VT the longest. That's a reward you need to earn through consistency and dedication, not through how much time you have on your hands. I don't want to rant and wont name names but there are people on here with over triple my post count who have made about a quarter as many quality, helpful, or significantly contributing posts. That is not something to be rewarded. And I'm not saying that all my posts are like that, but the majority of them are. Personally I don't really care for custom faces because I most likely wouldn't use them, however I certainly do not agree with what is being proposed here.

It sounds to me like you want another form of avatar? We already have that as a customizable image so what's the point other than encouraging more spam for a custom post face?

7500 is the proposed number for now, and we were planning on holding a graphics contest in order to pick the new face/avatar. Vakarian, I think you only read the first post, please read the others to get a better idea.

I hate to shoot this down but it is not needed what so ever and will not improve postings or the quality of posts.

But I like the idea, count me in if there is a Graphics Comp, and the post count should be 7500 or 6500, whichever is the more reasonable.

I am very much against it. I know in the other thread I said maybe at 10000 posts people could have it. However I think we would see an increase in spam not only from new members but all current members try to be one of the first few to unlock this (yes I know we have a few at 10000, however not many).

We would have more spam and I just think it would make the site ugly with all these random faces...

I think that the post quality has honestly gone down for those who post numerous times per day. Trust me, I do take lurk through their posts to see if it's just my old self thinking this or if it's truth. For the most part, it's been a fact that multiple posts per day and quality can't coincide.

Ant holds my end of the argument. Post faces as a whole aren't that great anyways, if you ask me. I've been on numerous forums that run perfectly fine without them. All they lead to is a hierarchy of sorts, where people with high posts/posts per day tend to feel more important than those with lower post counts.

I really dislike custom faces and I have to agree with what Ant said. The idea of people spamming (even more) to get up to 10k posts just to be able to edit their user rank face is not a good one, so I'm going to say no on this one.
