The other day, I watched a documentary on the presidents of the 20th Century (1900s) and I was curious as to what people here on VT thought. At the end of the documentary, they had several historians who they had interviewed throughout the show give their opinion on who they thought was the best president of the 20th Century. Consistently they said the answer who I thought as well: Franklin Roosevelt. Yes, it's cliched as well, but I have a great deal of respect for the man. He was popular, powerful, and yet he did a magnificent job of connecting with the people. His constituents. His policies helped bring the nation out of the Great Depression, and he guided the United States--and debatably even the world--through World War II. He may not have been the most moral character, nor have made ALL the right decisions, but of the presidents in the 20th Century, I personally think he was the best. What do you guys think?

I believe the best of the 20th century was JFK and he was certainly the last great president. He helped pass civil rights laws, showed an interest in education, and the space program.

It really has to be FDR. He served for 12 years and was elected 4 times before he died and did everything you previously mentioned.
Otherwise I'd probably say Eisenhower or Teddy Roosevelt were the best. Both of them really advanced America.

Ronald Reagan. He took down the Berlin wall, reunited Germany, defeated the Soviet Union. And he had a good immigration policy. :D

I agree that FDR was a great president. He really turned around the great depression and helped get America back on it's feet. Another is Calvin Coolidge -- he rarely gets acknowledged but definitely deserves to. He cleaned up the big mess that Harding left for him and resolved the Teapot Dome scandal.

FDR, he dealt with the most. But I like Teddy Roosevelt. Teddy Roosevelt was just a badass. "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far." He had no fear for anything lol.

Nothing in the question or thread title limits this to presidents of the USA so my feeling is that you guys are all being kind of insular. My vote goes to Mikhail Gorbachev, what that man achieved was truely remarkable and has made the world a much safer place.

If we are talking about US Presidents, then FDR, with Regan second and I'm with the others, do explain Carter?

I'd agree with this as well, he was a good president as well.

Gorbachev was too liberal for his good, he was great with the people liberties but he did "crash the dying on the iceberg".....(I made that quote up by the way, anyone like it? I think of it meaning "to seal the deal" haha)

Khruschev was my personal favorite, stalins aide, yet became his opposite, prob benefited the soviets the most compared to the others, also he was full of charisma, so was yeltsin after a few,

Btw calvin co. Should be the face of a true republican, tht guys was so hands free
