I'm in cross country and in jv, well basically anybody who is not the top 7 (varsity) or freshmen fall in that category, but within JV, there are those who wear the regular jerseys and the white jerseys (top 7). Our team is pretty big 50 boys and about 30 girls. So last year it was my first year, and I was basically 38 on the team, at the beginning of the season I was 31, then in every single league meet I was 19, and I've been working my ass off and in the mt. sac invitational I went up to 15 on the team, basically just one spot from a jersey change. (Didn't make it by 5 seconds). Now next year its my senior year, I know that at least I'll get to the top 7 in JV, but I really want, to be in the top 7 that are in varsity. I know it's a long story, but I'm just wondering if there is anyone out there that made a big jump, and what did you do? Also I'm over realistic I guess and I could be a pessimist, and I feel like I'm not going to be able to get in, so seriously if anyone has any advice I would appreciate it. Can a xc miracle really happen?

Hey I almost ran at Mt Sac! My coach decided not to send our team though.
Cross country miracles can happen for sure man. I'm finishing up 4 years on XC, got to be Team Captain this year. I've been on varsity all 4 years and last year made state championships, hoping to repeat again this year. Our team might even make it, which would be AWESOME.

Some people just have raw natural talent. There are people on my team that don't work as hard as me and are just as fast. I've found two key things though that really make me fast. Consistency, and track workouts. You have to run 6 days a week if you really want to make it, all the best runners do it. Every day you don't train is a day of conditioning others gain on you that you can't get back. And then there are track or speed workouts. When you get to a high level of running, cardio can only go so far. The only way you can hold a 5:30 or lower pace for 3 miles is if you know what running a sub 5:30 pace feels like. We do a lot of 800 and 400 meter training. If you can't go fast, cardio is worthless. We train for like 4:40-5:00 pace, then try and go sub 5:30 in races.

What are your best times this year?

Yeah I train 6 days a week, and sometimes even seven like on a sunday. The thing is there are so many good people in my team, last year we won CIF prelims and finals, and State Finals in our division. We usually run a lot 6 miles or more at like a 6:45-6:25 pace for varsity. We do a lot of hill work outs and I would say an even number of track work outs. My best time this year was 17:47 and I got 18:05 at Mt. Sac.

and keep training hard. don't get too comfortable with your 6 day workout. train longer distances.

Well you are on the right track for sure. My best time this year was 16:15, but I'm looking to go sub 16 at NCS. That should put me at state champs again.

Let me tell you my XC Miracle without sounding to boring. I started my XC career freshman year, finished my first race almost last with a 28:37. Wasn't good at all during freshman year. The only reason I made the team is because they didn't make cuts. I worked my ass of Sophomore year and was middle of the pack JV. I was determined I was going to win a title before I left senior year. Junior year was a good year for me. I ran may ass of as the beginning of the year and made it into the top 10(I was number 3 on the JV squad). They take the top 10 to the title race because the top 7 run and the next 3 are alternates in case there is a crazy injury or anything. I didn't get to run buy it was fun be there for my team. I worked my ass of all off season and my coached noticed. I was named captain over the summer. Long story short I was number 3 on the team my senior year, when we ended up winning the title. And I got to hoist the plaque because I was tat captain of that team. It was a great feeling. If you need any help or anything just let me know.
