Well as far as "rock music", Aerosmith would be my favorite. I would probably say Alice in Chains or Nirvana but they're classified as "grunge" , I would also pick Metallica, but they're "Heavy Metal" . I would also think about choosing Linkin Park, but they are considered "Nu-Metal", so is Korn ( another one of my favorites ).
Rock has lead to the creation of a lot of a lot of great genres and sub-genres and shit, that's why it's my favorite music genre :D So if I had to pick my favorite band that is pure "Rock & Roll" , I would choose Aerosmith, I like Journey and The Beatles a lot too.

"Right music"? Well, as many things I've read about The Beatles, they liked to experiment sounds and use different instruments (for exemple, Nowergian Wood is said to be the first ocidental song with a citar *that indian guitar, I don't if that's the name in english*). If the guys weren't genious, they wouldn't have made the "right music"! Helter Skelter is said to be the first metal song ever (again, the Beatles liked to experiment sounds)... They were just complete, and nowadays music wouldn't be the same without them (y)
So, that's why I think they were the best: they were versatile

They experimented because George and John wanted to, not because they wanted to push boundaries as a group. George loved the sitar when he visited India and brought it back, John was doing a shitload of drugs and dating Yoko Ono. Paul and Ringo couldn't care less. Experimentation does not mean founding new genres. If that's the case, I've made hundreds of new genres from diddling on my piano.
