Living in Canada I guess we are lucky, as a whole I feel most people are a lot more accepting but no matter where you go, people are always stuck in their ways. I could easily come out and live life normally as I do but I personally am not ready, sure some names may be thrown my way but such is life. And there are a lot of support groups and such like pride and the gay straigjt alliance etc etc,

I live in Canada, and I think that we're extremely accepting of LGBT. Here's an article with more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_Canada

Canadians are, in general, accepting of LGBT people.

However, I'd have to say most people are still really ignorant to queer issues, things involving gender identity and although they'll probably say they are accepting and have no real 'problem' with queer people, they don't know that much.

Well, at least in terms of some (a lot of) people I know. Honestly some things I think are common knowledge for queer people isn't well known by most.

Some areas of Canada are very conservative. The Maritime provinces are full of narrow minded people with small town attitudes. Meanwhile, in BC there is Vancouver: the queerest city I've ever been to.

However it is still, in my opinion, the best place for a queer person to live in North America. Our laws generally mean people have equal rights--there is still discrimination in the workplace and people still look at you funny on occasion if you are out and about with your partner, but for the most part people don't care. I see a ton of same-sex couples out and no one gives a fuck.

Seriously, I think a ton of my teachers know I'm queer and they don't care. It's like, not even a thing to them. My friends are pretty cool, my best friend didn't even bat an eyelash when she learned I was bi.

So yes long story short Canada is the place to be for queers. You can get married, have a job, a normal life and celebrate your sexuality without a lot of worry for discrimination.

Halifax is my home and I am not a fan of you bashing the maritime provinces as a whole.
If you want to point to the conservative part of the country you need to look at Alberta and Saskatchewan. The maritimes usually vote Liberal or NDP.

Halifax is very diverse and accepting of LGBT folks.

And yes, it is legal for any two people to marry in our wonderful country. That is a hige step the Americans can't seem to manage unfortunately.

I think every country will have pockets of conservatives and pockets of people who are more open to LGBT. Some countries might have more conservatives that people who are open and vice versa.

It all just depends really on how modern places are or how old fashioned they are.

Yes, Canada is more accepting than America. My ex-boyfriend is from Canada and when he came down here last year he said he saw a big difference, he has two gay foster parents. In Vancouver he said people never really noticed or took offense, but in Florida he'd always get looks and he said just the overall vibe people gave them was more unfriendly than friendly.

Like said above though, you're always gonna find close-minded people and open-minded people no matter where you are. Just some places have a better overall feeling than others.

I am not bashing the Maritimes, thank you. I live there too and while yes we aren't that bad, a lot of people here are still somewhat conservative in ideology. It is getting better and better, I was simply giving a comparison to how different some sections of the country are.

My province is governed by the Conservatives at the moment, and in my opinion voting Liberal isn't something to be that proud of. I am not a huge fan of that party either.

Off topic though.

While I can't speak too much on Halifax as I haven't been there in a few years, a gay activist was just killed there not so long ago, if memory serves. It is a very good city on the east coast for queer people though, as I hear it.

I can't speak much for Alberta or Saskatchewan. I've been to them, but I'm not super familiar with either place on a personal level.

But I'll agree that we do have a wonderful country.

Yep, Calgary's in Alberta. Alberta might be one of the more "conservative" provinces in Canada, but they are still pretty accepting of LGBTQ people.

I'm a Canadian and I believe very strongly that people should have the right to be with and marry whomever they desire.

Even the more poorly behaved students In high-school don't seem to care, I was out having a cigarette and they were talking about how a bi guy was staring at them in the locker room, they said they wouldn't have a problem if he didn't stare, which is just respect :P
