It means in this context that the sport is played 'within the walls' of your school, and hence no competition from outside your school. In essence, it is a sport played solely against teams from 'within the walls' of your school.

Does this mean it would be likely I could make an intramural soccer team, even if I'm not that good

Well, I imagine that would be acceptable practice. I don't know the American school system at all, but I'd have thought you could start up something like that as a recreational activity to occur during breaks, after school et cetera. Also I imagine you're better than you'd have yourself believe at it, given your obvious interest! Something like this could only help you further improve.

I believe intramural sports are sorta like clubs in a way, but they play against teams from within the same school. I have only ever heard of it used in colleges
