So, lets discuss Chernobyl and its many pondering wonders!

I want to know what you all think Chernobyl could be used for if it actually could. Keeping in mind that the soil is still highly contaminated in some places.

Also for you syfy and horror lovers like me, is there a possibility in the radiation actually altering DNA causing a genetic mutation into zombies? Could there actually be genetic mutation going on with creatures and people who were and possibly still are in the Chernobyl contamination zone?

Love to hear what you all think!

I'm not Ukrainian, so I have no idea what I could even begin to think of, hm. I'm sure it'll become a tourist sight. Wander through what once was and all of that, once the levels are safe enough. Maybe, since wild life's returning, it'll be a little "forgotten land" where people let the place be and be overgrown.

I'm sure the contaminated people are dead or dying or in horrendous agony. of course it depends on how exposed they are/were. But I'm not thinking there's zombies, maybe a duck running around with an inverted foot but no zombies.

Kinda off topic... But about zombies, they cant last long. They are made of dead human flesh that is some how re animated but its not alive really, they would rot out and fall apart pretty fast. :P

I think the zones that are "clean" are used as tourists locations. Pretty scary if you ask me, also I don't believe there have zombie sightings in the 25 years it's been guarded off. I don't think it's possible.

Yeah, zombies aren't going to happen. Maybe the radiation will result in some interesting genetic mutations in plant life though :) It could become like a national... radiation... park or something.

If I'm correct it takes 50 000 years for the radiation to go down to about 50%,so it would take a heck of a long time before it could be used for anything(I'm not entirely sure so don't quote me on this)

I have no idea what it looks like over there but I guess it could be used as a museum kinda thing for what happened, though I guess in 100 000+ years people wouldn't give a rats arse about it

I've heard/seen some pretty gnarly side effects from Chernobyl, my crush's mom is Ukrainian and left Pripyat IIRC 2 weeks before the nuclear accident at Chernobyl, just her luck :D

There were some pretty interesting mutations already reported. Unfortunately, most of the victims look like this (https://feww.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/chernobyl-babies-photo-1.jpg), as apposed to this (http://cdn1.screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/x-men-4-team-roster.jpg)

Pretty sure there's still soldiers stationed there so even if there were mutants they'd be shot

Those pictures are well-known; they come from a famous photo project of Paul Fusco. There is definitely distance to take from those - not because they aren't real (they clearly are), but because they are part of an art project, not a scientific study. Such spectacularly difform people can be found in every human population. So take them with a huge pinch of salt and a very critical eye.

From what is known for certain about Chernobyl is that radiation exposure are likely to increase chances of some forms of cancer, meaning an increased mortality rate and diminished life expectancy. Nasty, but not visually spectacular.

Chernobyl cannot currently be "used" for a lot of things. What it de-facto became - a natural reserve - is probably the best use that can be made of that area for a couple centuries.

As for zombies, no, you cannot expect it. Glowing skins and other Hulk-like creatures are also out of the question.

I believe it is relatively safe to visit, though living "off the land" is absolutely dangerous for your health.

And no, zombies wouldn't exist, because there is no such thing as zombies.

It's relatively safe to visit as long as you don't go for like more than an hour and stay a pretty good distance away form the factory.....then yes, safe. But if you think safe means no danger the. HELL NO AAAHHHHH RADIATION. AHHH MY FACEEEE IT BUUURRRRNNNNSSSSSSSSSSS! I hope that paints a picure :)

Safe for a few hours...but no one will let you in. Most likely, because it is still contaminated

chernobyl in my opinion cant be really used for anything maybe to simulate a nuclear fallout scenero? or really radical tests

it could i guess but not like the zombie where only fire kills it, maybe the radiation could destoy parts of the frontal lobes and other membranes idk...

A banana will cause gen mutation, but only in a hand full of cells. As for zombies , the closest thing to that in real life is rabies. And that's a long shot from zombies

I read about that aswell. Rabies is the closest we can get to zombies but its pretty mean and they will go after you...i think

You can go as far as Pripiat with a tour company but any further is highly radioactive and guarded. It will take about 48,000 years until it's completely safe again.
And no, radiation doesn't cause things like zombies :P

Hahaha darn, ya zombies was a little far. I was tryin to get at possible mutations or changes to brain function that could cause differences in behavior in social situations, not like a flesh eating zombie, but and overly aggressive person that is a threat to society due to over exposure to the radiation, any possibilities?
