View Full Version : why do some people consider Cannabis(Marijuana) as an illegal drug and others don't?

*IMPORTANT NOTE: I HAVE NEVER TAKEN ANY DRUGS AND DO NOT ADVERTISE THEM. THE LINK IN THIS TOPIC IS ONLY AS A RESOURCE.*
As title say. Like in California, some people say Cannabis is an illegal drug that should be stopped and others say it helps with medical reasons. Also why is cannabis illegal when it only makes you hungry, relaxed and laugh, and high? in-addition why is alcohol legal when it is way more dangerous than Cannibis which is safer?
A site with a Cannabis VS Alcohol page (http://www.saferchoice.org/content/view/24/53/)
two pictures comparing the two:

Marijuana isn't really bad and should be legalized. There still should be an eighteen or older limit of course and teens shouldn't smoke it. But if anything should be illegal in all this is tobacco. Nicotine is very addictive but you can still get that at any grocery store or gas station. I think marijuana is not a drug and is more helpful than others. I've never used cannabis but I've used other drugs which I can say were very harmful.

There is a lot of outdated propaganda against Marijuana that has been proven to be false. A lot of people aren't educated on the topic. Others just don't want another drug to be legalized.

Marijuana's very popular in my city, people protest about legalizing it pretty often. They pretty much want to overthrow the government over a plant. Hah.
I personally don't think that there should be any substance that's used to get high or drunk or whatever permitted. For medical reasons, sure. I don't see why alcohol is still legal, or even got legalized in the first place.
The government has even tried to convince you that most people who use marijuana are losers who sit around on couches all day doing nothing.
Describes most of the pot smokers in my city. Just saying from personal experience. Maybe not all people who smoke pot are like this elsewhere, but it accurately describes much of the population here.

Marijuana is a drug and can be harmful, especially to teenagers with our rapid and important brain development. Someone posted a link on this thread which might be of interest.

Yes it is TERRIBLE for teenagers to do it. I would never justify the use of ir by teens but for adults I don't see a problem with it. :D

in places like california it isnt completely legal as you require a medical card for it because it does have PROVEN medical benefits. Why cannabis is illegal is a very big question, with many answers. I say if you are really interested in learning the truth about cannabis look up and watch a documentary called The Union, if your more interested in the medicinal side, look up on youtube a video called run from the cure.

In my opinion, all drugs should be legalised; if someone wants to use a chemical to get high and possibly fuck up their body, so be it.

I honestly think it should be legalized.
My brother smokes it, and knows better to not let me, since I'm still under 18.
He has told me all about it, and how it benefits people medically, yet it isn't legal in America or the UK, where I live, but that's another matter.
He isn't a stereotypical pot smoker. He has a job, and a social life, so he doesn't just sit around smoking pot all day like some people.

Maybe not the best idea. I mean cocaine, heroin, crack cocaine, methamphetamine, can really fuck up some people's lives. We shoudn't allow their own ignorance to kill them. Still marajuana has positive benefits but only a couple negative benefits.
And like legion said. IT SHOULD NOT BE SMOKED BY SOMEONE UNDER 18. and those people who are the steryotypical pot smokers would propably stay home and sleep all day. They woudn't make anything out of their lives anyways. And many people who do smoke pot work and are really smart people.

Well, see, it's not a chemical though.
If it needs to be processed in a lab before becoming the substance, it should be illegal to use recreationally imo. Meth, cocaine, opiates, etc. of course, but marijuana's a plant like tobacco, and better for you than tobacco. When it gets legalized you know I'm switching.

yes it is ridiculously easy but that doesnt mean its useless as a medicine, on the contrary, its one of the best around

this is a very big question and to find actual non biased answers your going to have to do your own research. Hemp, harvested from the cannabis plant, is a green (no pun intended) renewable resource with thousands (yes thousands) of practical uses in everyday life. It posed a threat to the timber industry, it poses a threat to the pharmacuetical companies and to the alcohol and tobacco industry. Research my man, research

if you are looking for a very informative documentary that covers a lot of the questions you seem to be asking look up and watch "The Union" it will really open your eyes/change your perspective on the whole issue. I strongly advise anyone and everyone to watch that documentary as a lot of the misconceptions and 'facts' about cannabis are due to misinformation due to propaganda when it was first being banned.

Alcohol and nicotine are drugs... Who said they weren't? Also. All three are drugs because they have some effect on your perception. Nicotine is a stimulant, alcohol is a depressant, and Marijuana is a psychoactive drug.

Drugs arent called drugs because they are bad in some way, "A drug is a substance which may have medicinal, intoxicating, performance enhancing or other effects when taken or put into a human body or the body of another animal and is not considered a food or exclusively a food."
Anything in excess is 'bad', regardless if it is a drug or not. You can drink to much water and die. I can tell from your post you are uninformed on this matter and therefore should find out some actual facts so you can have an informed opinion.

Exactly. That's like assuming all food is bad for you as Double Cheeseburgers:lol:. Drugs aren't drugs because they get you "high" they induce reactions in your body. For instance anti-depressants restore chemical balance to Serotonin levels. What I'm getting at is drugs aren't drugs because they're dangerous substances, substances are considered drugs because they cause a reaction in your body..

There are no withdrawal symptoms from cannabis because it is not physically addcitve - nice one. The rest of those are pretty much all the same thing and most for the majority of people are untrue. Do some actual research with proper studies with large sample spaces instead of ones conducted on a hundred people because they dont say much at all.

Lots of great info on here.
Marijuana is illegal for greater reasons that it's use when smoked. It's by-product from the male strain of the plant; hemp, can be used for MANY things, including pulp and paper manufacturing, clothing (vs. cotton), and even biofuels. This would put many industries today out of business if it were allowed to prosper.
The true effects of marijuana are unknown. There have been studies which lead us to believe that THC oils can cure certain cancers when applied to effected areas. This will remain unstudied and unknown for years, maybe longer.
As it has been said, if you're looking for information on the plant, don't start with a government affiliated page. They don't always have the answers

There is no reason that it should be illegal. Those laws came about as a result of wealthy politicians trying to get it banned when the paper industry was doing badly as a result of hemp paper.
Instead of just getting rid of hemp they banned the actual plant (marijuana.)
Nowadays we know that there are more benefits to using it than any other drug and it is the least likely to cause major harm.
While it might not be good for people under the age of 18 (and even then it won't kill you lol) it should be legal like alcohol for people of a certain age.
The fact that it is being used legally for minor injuries as "medical marijuana" just makes the politicians seem very hypocritical.
And all studies that were put up to make it seem like marijuana is dangerous are actually proven false.

I think the reason many people have different feelings about marijuana is because everybody has their own opinion, everyone is different. The people who are against it, may say it is illegal because it impairs your ability to act and or think, (alcohol, even though it's legalised ) has the same effect, but there are a lot of ads and shit that say "drink responsibly" . There are some places and states where marijuana is legalised, and in other places where it is close to being legalised. Now, the people who are for it being legalised, their reasoning is probably because it is not much different than alcohol, and the health threats aren't as severe as alcohol or nicotine/tobacco. My opinion, is that it should be legalised since it's not very different from alcohol ( which is legalised ), but everybody has their reasoning and opinions for why it's not legal.
Disclaimer:
I am not promoting or endorsing the use of drugs, just stating my opinion. That's all.

I have this strange fascination of wanting to force people that hate pot to get high off pot so they're like, "I'm so fucking angry that I'm stoned but holy shit I want to eat a bunch of fucking donuts! Wow! Food tastes so good right now! This shit really sucks! Need more donuts!"
Like i'd give them brownies or other recipes. I don't know. I'm sort of a devil. I'd probably never do that... maybe to my grandma.
I remember reading a story about this kid who rolled his weed in the cigarette papers with filters and he dropped one of them and his mom thought it was his dads. Later his dad ended up smoking it and got stoned as fuck. Something like that just really intrigues me.
All these crazy tea party conservatives need is to smoke some weed and maybe they'll chill the fuck out. Not that I'm advocating it or anything... pot is evil! It's satan! AHAHHAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! SATAN!! EVIL SATAN BLERGH SATAN BLACK METAL WAHHHHH!!!!
that doesn't answer your question at all but whatever i'm gay

Well, duh. I meant it is a naturally-occurring one, as opposed to meth, and doesn't have to be synthesized or excessively processed to become the final product, as opposed to cocaine (coca leaf, 0.25% - 0.77% cocaine, must be processed) and heroin (opium, 12% morphine, chemical reaction with acetic anhydride, then twice as potent as morphine).

The reason some people say marijuana is illegal and some say it is not is that it is legal under some state laws, but it is federally illegal in the United States; therefore, it's not legal, whether or not the state says it is. It's a big issue right now, actually.
It does supposedly have health benefits, and I don't know why it's illegal except that it's kind of a social taboo for some reason. Personally, I'm all for the legalization of it.
