View Full Version : My music taste is sinful!? WHAT!?

So I'm a christian... But not really religious, more spiritualistic... I'm not going to get into my own personal faith here but I have a question...

My mother is very straight up in your face christian (I'm obviously not) and she thinks that my music is "Sinful"

Whats your opinion, if you are religious (or even if you're not) do you think the things you watch/read/listen to can be "Sinful" or wrong.

My more extreme/sinful music tastes (according to my mother lol) mainly include: Marilyn Manson, Lady Gaga, Adam Lambert, Tokio Hotel, Panic! At The Disco, Mindless Self Indulgence, My Chemical Romance and a few hard rock bands that I'm too lazy to list.

These don't seem that extreme/sinful to me???

What are your thoughts on music and religion? How do you feel about your own musical taste affecting your own beliefs? Any similar experiences with your parents?

To be fair, I can see where she's coming from on Manson.

I totally see where she's coming from on Manson. The others, not so much.

Ehhh, the others are a little debatable~ But I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Sometimes, you just like music for the music. There are plenty of punk bands I enjoy that promote anarchy, and I'm not an anarchist. Your beliefs are a part of your life, they don't need to be everything in your life.

Manson definitely as others have said because he's an atheist, and an honorary minister in the Church of Satanism (Which is actually atheistic in itself) but I can't understand why she'd disprove of some of the other artists (some of whom are Christian like Lady Gaga). Just try explaining to her why you like the music and how they aren't that evil or whatever.
And as for my opinion, I like several Christian bands even though I'm an atheist, so I don't think religion really matters in music; music's about expressing emotion more than anything else!

Who cares what your mother thinks, as long as you enjoy it and she doesn't stop you from listening to it, then there's no problem.

I'm sorry but if it's a church of Satanism, doesn't that mean that they believe in Satan? Meaning that they're not atheistic, but Satanic.

Atheism = Belief in nothing.

The most popular branch of satanism is Laveyan satanism, which is really more of a philosophy, not unlike buddhism. Theistic satanists who actually reverse Satan as a god are very, very rare.

Theistic (actually worship Satan) Satanists are technically a denomination of Christianity as Satan is a Christian concept. LeVeyan Satanism uses Satan as a metaphor and is basically like Buddhism in the sense of it having no actual god, although the beliefs are nearly opposite to Buddha's teachings...

That's my point. Regardless- If your mother isn't cool with it, OP, you might just have to settle for listening to the things you like in private to avoid dealing with your mother's sensibilities. Music is one of life's greatest joys, and you shouldn't have to miss out on the stuff you enjoy or feel guilty about it because other people don't approve.

I can agree with that. I meant I can see where her mom is coming from as far as Manson's appearance, seeing as some parents tend to jump to conclusions as far as appearances go.

And don't get me started on the music video for Lady Gaga's Alejandro. I was going to be snarky and post a picture here but I think it's a little risqué for this site~

Yeah, I could see that. I'm not Christian or anything, but a lot of that music does have "sinful" lyrical content :P

I kind of understand Manson no offense. But other than that they don't seem like something someone could label as "sinful". I think some music could be considered anti-religious but I don't wanna get into that discussion XD

I don't think those artists are necessarily "sinful" but I do see where she is coming from and think you could have a better taste in music. :D

Manson and how she feels bout him, I understand. But hes not a bad guy and his music isnt about being crazy. Im a weird person, I listen to grunge and alot of it isnt what Christians would approve of being Im agnostic. But if you like grunge, hard rock, that kinda stuff check out Creed and Flyleaf, they are harder but good stuff your mom would approve of being they are Christian bands.

I absolutely adore flyleaf. Although she still doesn't approve... XD Its mor ethe type of music I think that sets her off. Like if I were listening to mellow country or soft pop or something liek that she'd be fine with it... :/ Its confusing. But thanks for the help!

A Satanist is someone who believes all the things that Christians believe exist but believes that what they worship should not be worshipped and that satan should be worshipped instead.

Your mom shouldn't tell you what to listen to. It pisses me off when religious people say certain music is 'Satanic'. For the most part, satanic imagery is used in music purely for shock factor. If she'd actually bother to learn anything about the bands you listen to, she would have no ground to stand on the accusations she makes. I mean, maybe if you sat in your room listening to Hotel California backwards all day, she would have something to worry about.

I'm going to use Marilyn Manson as an example, because I love defending him from people who don't know anything about him and his music. Most of his songs are about expression, being the person you truly want to be, not the person your church or your government wants you to be. The purpose of him ripping up the bible or burning the flag on stage is to symbolize how little those actually symbolize. The bible and the flag only stand for what you think they stand for. He challenges what we're supposed to believe, in ways that get the most attention possible. You can say what you like about his music, but the fact is that he is a great guy who takes shit from everyone and their dog for supposedly polluting childrens' lives. Don't believe me? Hear it from Manson himself.

Religion shouldn't stop you from enjoying music. I'm Atheist but I like a handful of Christian bands.

I'd say you have a pretty good taste in music. Keep it up and don't let people stop you from doing what you want to do.

As for the religious schtick going on, I'll say this: I think that Theistic Satanism is really, really stupid.

ok, i am also a christian, but first thing about chrisitanity, going to church, have the communialy or what ever it is called(the thingy with the wine and bread) and bombadabing, your sins are gone. try that. other wise, just tell her that listening to music is not sinfully. but as i don't know about the first on not sure, but the rest are fine.

When I listen to music I usually focus on the background music and not the lyrics, unless its a song that I REALLY LIKE.

A good example of this is 希望のうた -みんなありがとう- by Hatsune Miku, it has great background instrumentals (in my opinion) nice, soft, and peaceful. Great for relaxing.

I don't really consider music that isn't christian sinful. But there are certain genres of music I don't like.

most of my music collection is all J-pop, I'm a Vocaloid fanatic, but most people wonder why I listen to the stuff since its in a foreign language but I don't let that stop me. I also like music that doesn't talk about sex and/or doesn't contain cussing and swearing.

I can understand where you're coming from.
I grew up in a Christian household and my mother was the exact same way with me and my music, God love her.
She thought it was depressing/negative/not pleasing to God........
It all started when I began listening to Linkin Park at the age of 12, but I won't get into that...
Basically, it doesn't matter what you do or how old you are, your mom will always find problems with the music you listen to - doesn't matter if you're 13 or 19 or freakin' 75 xD
She'd probably be happier if you just listened to Chris Tomlin or Toby Mac, or worse yet, The Gaithers lmao
If you wanted though, you could compromise (for her sake, at least) and listen to come Christian rock bands like Thousand Foot Krutch, Skillet, Red, or Flyleaf, and then just listen to your stuff in secret...
That way, she won't feel so strongly that your soul is in danger... lol
But yeah, those are basically the only Christian rock groups I'll touch with a 10-foot pole, and many of their singles have actually crossed over to mainstream.
They're really quite good, actually, and rarely preachy at all :3

I hope things get better for you, bro.
Moms can be scary, I know :P

Haha, but anyway, thanks for the support! <3

Anyways, you should have control on what you listen. There's no point in your mum going against your musical tastes as long as you don't play it out loud the whole day or something like that.
