View Full Version : Anyone cook for themselves?

I'm curious, does anyone here mostly eat meals you cooked yourself? I still live with my folks, but they and I have pretty different schedules, so about half a year ago I started learning to make delicious meals all on my own. It's fun, rewarding, and a valuable life skill- I like to think I've gotten pretty good at it since I first started. So uh, to help get this started...
When did you start mostly or entirely cooking for yourself? Did you learn by trial and error, or did anyone teach you? Any fun experiences preparing meals?

I mostly cook for myself, I live in the bush and don't have access to fast food or supermarkets. I have to go and buy a months worth of stuff every month and live off it.

I'm dirt poor, so most of the time it's fast food/junk food :\
Though I do try to cook for my family on occasion. Other times, when my dad isn't cooking, and i'm too lazy, a waffle will be my dinner.

You know, most ladies adore men who can cook for themselves.

True, and to lure them in I do cook for them, until a certain point at which they cook for me.

Young man? Haven't been called that by anyone in awhile lol, regardless I generally straddle the line between humorous and serious.

My parents taught me to cook the basics, then I took it from there. Fast food is expensive here compared to cooking food yourself though, which is another contributing factor I suppose.

Not to mention fast food is terribly unhealthy and gross. :x

Life is too shore to live too seriously.
And it may be unhealthy and gross but since I don't smoke and drink I can afford myself one vice.

Like a lot of people here, my mother's been a fantastic help in teaching me how to cook. She's got this binder full of incredible recipes she's put together over the years- Of all the things I'm going to inherit someday, it's easily going to be one of my most treasured.

I don't really cook I can make like macaroni and cheese from the box and you know easy stuff like that. My mom and my step mom try to teach me but I get bored waiting for stuff to boil and cook so I leave and then it burns

I can cook for myself--and in fact I'm better at it than my mom. :P Most of the time though, I either just let her cook or we go out and get something. Yeah, I like cooking and I'm a fairly good cook, but I don't have as much time as I'd like to have to be able to cook at this point in my life. Between school, extracurricular activities, college applications, etc., I hardly have enough time as it is

Really? I know plenty of wonderful recipes that can be prepared in less than forty five minutes.

Not really. I used to have my mom cook spicy noodles though...now I can do them myself, although ever since I discovered the easier way, I have been using that way (microwave)

Yeah I enjoy it. I have a small list of things I can make and I do often enough to make edible, and I sometimes see things on tv that my mum gets me the stuff to make if I fancy trying it. So if my parents go out I've made stuff for me & my boyfriend a few times instead of just getting a pizza or something (healthier!).

I actually cook for my mom and me all the time. The thing is, my mom's pretty ill and most of the time she can't do any house work at all. That means I'm stuck with all the cleaning, washing and cooking which really isn't ideal for a 13 yo.
But I've really started to enjoy the cooking part. It's fun and I'm learning a lot, esp from the internet. :)

I wake up late on the weekends so everyone in my house has already eaten breakfast and i have to cook my own breakfast. I just watch my mom do it and after a few tries, i got a hang of it. Haha.

Well, I kind of have to. But I started when I was sixteen. Cooking isn't hard, and I don't understand people who can't, taught or not. I used to cook full breakfast at age nine.

Yeah sometimes I am home when my parents are not and need to get stuff to eat before they come back to then take me somewhere, so yeah for the last three years or so I've been making my tea quite often during the week. Also I remembered a recipie for a chow mein from School and make that for my mum and me every so often, it goes down well, very tasty. Also when I'm off school I almost always need to make my own lunch as I'm the only one home! :P
