Hi, recently I have tried to give rep to a guy on this site because nearly every time I see a reply from him it really helps me out but the 2nd time I have tried to give rep it says something along the lines of "you must spread reputation about before giving to "******** again" (not wanting to name people) why is this? I mean I could understand of it was constantly giving rep to one guy but its not I've repped several people in between times and just so happened to appreciate a post this guy has made, what are the rules and limits around giving rep? I'm not questioning the jobs anyone on vt does, I greatly respect the site and everyone that contributes to it, I'm just curious about this rule

It is in place so that people don't abuse it, be it positively or negatively.
Take, for example, someone didn't like another member, and wanted to make them look bad. They could infinitely neg repping that member to make them look bad. This would be abuse of the rep system.
The same goes for positive repping. If you really want a member to have a high rep, you could click it indefinitely and give them a rep of 1000000 or something.
It's in place to make sure this doesn't happen.

You have to spread it around to 10 different people before you can give it to them again (I believe it is 10). It is to keep people from amassing a massive amount of rep quickly.

I also think there is a cap on how much rep you can give out in a day. However I am not sure on that one.

Yes, there is. I reached it once. :P it's probably 15+ or something around that number.

I think it is something like that. I heard it was 10 just like the number of people you must rep before you can rep them again. However I am not sure on the limit.
