I've noticed a series of little green squares on their info. I guess they're a good thing but what are they and how do you get them?

I'm assuming you mean rep. Read about it here. (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/faq.php?faq=vb3_user_profile#faq_vb3_reputation)

When people see your posts, they can click the little icon which looks like a set of scales. This is the rep button. There they have the option of awarding positive or negative rep along with a comment explaining why they have awarded that type of rep. When you have green squares under your info, that means you have had more positive rep than negative. When they are red, you have had more negative rep that positive.
Don't worry about the rep system too much though. People don't really look at it much. In addition, it won't affect your chances on becoming a staff member as the admins look at the quality of your posts and behavior, and not rep when choosing new moderators.
Hope that answers your question

They re reputation points. You get reputation when someone clicks the scales at the bottom of a certain post. If the post is really good and helpful the OP or any other person might leave rep.
