Slain ex-US Navy Seal Glen Doherty's mother rebukes Romney

The mother of an American killed in last month's Libya consulate attack has said his death has been used by the Romney campaign for political purposes.

The Republican presidential nominee has been citing his meeting some years ago with former US Navy Seal Glen Doherty.

His campaign said the candidate would respect Barbara Doherty's wishes and stop mentioning her son.

The attack on the consulate in Benghazi on 11 September has become a political issue ahead of the election.

Doherty was killed in the attack in Benghazi along with Ambassador Christopher Stevens and two other officials.

"I don't trust Romney," Mrs Doherty told Boston news station WHDH.

"He shouldn't make my son's death part of his political agenda. It's wrong to use these brave young men, who wanted freedom for all, to degrade Obama," she said.

....

His friend, Elf Ellefsen, told a Seattle radio station: "He said it was very comical. Mitt Romney approached him ultimately four times, using this private gathering as a political venture to further his image.

"He kept introducing himself as Mitt Romney, a political figure. The same introduction, the same opening line. Glen believed it to be very insincere and stale,"

I'm a UK citizen so not an 'interested party' - but over here we keep seeing stories about Romney saying stupid things or lying then having to back down ("I like coal power" when he's on record for saying the opposite for years, the 47% of americans comment).

Telling tall tales to associate himself with the heroics of a dead soldier just seems so low to me.

The poor woman. Losing your child is hard enough. Having a politician exacerbate your pain and use his death to further their campaign is just horrific.

Oh geez. Does he like the taste of his feet? Why does this man have this uncanny knack for making himself such a fool? That poor, poor woman and her poor departed son! To have been used in such a way, ick!

How the hell does he still have support? My friend adores him because she doesn't like abortion. Then she goes on and on about Obama lying, and blah blah blah.

What the hell is Romney going to do? Turn his shit campaign into a robust economy? How much better is he going to do that Obama already has?

Haah, that's funny.
